Suns struggled offensively against Rockets
Phoenix (13-10 SU, 14-8-1 ATS, and 11-12 O/U) lost 117-98 to Houston in its previous game, failing to cover as 8.5-point underdogs. The Suns have dropped three of their last four.

Phoenix shot under 40 percent from the field, while Houston knocked down 59 percent of its field goals. The Rockets won by double digits despite turning the basketball over 23 times, as they scored 64 in the paint and shot 10-for-18 from three-point range. Phoenix was especially inefficient from deep (5-for-36).
The Suns were 36-46 last season, finishing 11th in the West and missing the playoffs. They had plenty of star power with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, but the group was rarely on the court together (23 starts). Phoenix was especially weak defensively, ranking 27th in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes. A Play-In tourney berth was still up for grabs late in the season, but the team went 1-9 in their final ten games, prompting the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer.
Phoenix made numerous changes this offseason, most notably waiving Beal and trading Durant to Houston. In total, eight players were allowed to leave. The Suns acquired Rockets starters Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks for KD, along with the tenth pick in the draft, which they used to select Duke center Khaman Maluach. They also acquired Charlotte center Mark Williams, who will slot into the starting lineup this season. The net result is a squad that's bigger, younger, more athletic, and stronger defensively. Still, the competition in the West is fierce, and the Suns' schedule is unforgiving, making a deep postseason run unlikely for Phoenix.
Phoenix Suns Key Injury Report:
- G Devin Booker (groin) and G Jalen Green (hamstring) are out.
- F Dillon Brooks (Achilles) is questionable to play against the T-Wolves.
Ant leads T-Wolves to strong start
Minnesota (15-8 SU, 8-15 ATS, and 12-11 O/U) beat the LA Clippers 109-106 in its last game, failing to cover the spread as eight-point favorites. The Timberwolves have won five straight games.
Minnesota shot 50 percent overall and worked its way to the foul line a lot (30-for-34 FT shooting) in Friday's win. The T-Wolves trailed by as many as 18 points, but rallied behind Jaden McDaniels (27 points) and Julius Randle (24). They also shot 44 percent from beyond the arc.
Anthony Edwards leads the Timberwolves in scoring, averaging 28.8 points per game on 49.4 percent shooting. He also averages 4.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. A few other Minnesota players to watch on Monday against the Suns are F Julius Randle (22.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 5.9 APG), F Jaden McDaniels (15.5 PPG and 4.9 RPG), G Donte DiVincenzo (14.0 PPG and 4.0 APG), and C Rudy Gobert (11.3 PPG and 10.3 RPG).
The Timberwolves score 120.8 points per game (4th) on 48.6 percent shooting (7th), including 38.7 percent from three-point range (4th). The Minnesota defense surrenders 115.5 points per game (13th) on 46.3 percent shooting (10th), including 35.6 percent from beyond the arc (11th). They are 9th in NET rating, including 9th in offensive rating and 9th in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes.
Minnesota Timberwolves Key Injury Report:
- No injuries to report.
Suns vs. Timberwolves Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Suns vs. Timberwolves
- Suns +10 (5 Units)
Phoenix will be motivated to snap its small losing streak tonight in Minneapolis. While the Suns could be without Brooks, who is a game-time decision, I still love the visitors' side, as I feel confident their defense can limit Edwards' impact. Minnesota has struggled to cover the spread this season, especially recently (2-7 ATS in the last nine games). The Suns lead the NBA in opponent turnover percentage and recently held the Timberwolves to 32 percent shooting from long range. They also dominated on the boards (+8 rebounding margin), winning straight-up despite committing 28 turnovers.
Phoenix's side has value against the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Suns vs. Timberwolves
- Over 224 (4 Units)
The over is 7-3 in the last ten matchups between these teams. It's also 4-1 in Minnesota's last five games and 3-1 in Phoenix's previous four. While the Suns can keep the game close enough with solid defense, this total is too low. These teams combined for 227 points on November 21, despite Booker's 4-for-18 shooting performance. Both teams committed more than 20 turnovers, and they combined for 62 free throws. I expect a similar outcome on Monday, with Phoenix dominating on the glass (6th in offensive rebounding percentage) and Minnesota attacking the Suns' bigs to get to the charity stripe (5th in FT rate).
