Thunder picked up where they left off last season

Oklahoma City (7-0 SU, 3-4 ATS, and 4-3 O/U) beat New Orleans 136-106 on Sunday. OKC is led by G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who averages 33.6 points per game. The Thunder score 122.1 points per game (6th) on 46.8 percent shooting (16th), including 31.5 percent from three-point range (28th). Their opponents score 109.7 points per game (2nd) on 42.7 percent shooting (1st), including 35.3 percent from beyond the arc (17th).

OKC won its first NBA championship in 2024-25 after finishing first in the Western Conference with a 68-14 regular-season record. Gilgeous-Alexander was awarded MVP honors for his dominant play (32.7 PPG, 6.4 APG, and 5.0 RPG), but it was a true team effort, as the Thunder set NBA records for the highest-ever point differential and most double-digit wins. With 95 percent of the minutes from last season's squad returning, Oklahoma City is expected to contend for the league's first back-to-back championship since 2017-18 (Golden State).

The Thunder were the youngest team in the NBA last season, and management has committed to the future, inking Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Holmgren to long-term extensions. For a franchise that once let Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook get away, that was a welcome sight for fans. As long as the team's stars can stay healthy, there's no reason to believe OKC won't be a title contender this season and in the years to come.

Blazers are a team on the come-up

Portland (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS, and 5-2 O/U) lost 123-115 to the LA Lakers on Monday, snapping its three-game winning streak. It was a frustrating loss considering the fact that the decimated Lakers were playing without LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves due to injuries and rest. The Trail Blazers are led by F Deni Avdija, who averages 24.1 points on 49 percent shooting. Portland scores 121.3 points per game (9th) with a 45.1 FG percentage (21st), including 32.3 percent from three-point distance (25th). The Blazers' opponents average 116.8 points per game (16th) on 50.0 percent shooting (27th), including 36.4 percent from beyond the arc (23rd).

Portland went 36-46 last season, finishing 12th in the Western Conference and missing the NBA Playoffs. Still, there was a lot for fans to feel cheerful about. The Blazers turned it on after the All-Star break with a 23-18 record, missing the Play-In Tournament by just three games. The 15-win improvement from the previous season was fueled by the breakouts of Shaedon Sharpe (18.5 PPG) and Deni Avdija (16.9 PPG and 7.3 RPG), as well as stout defensive play.

The Trail Blazers solidified their roster by adding veteran players during the offseason. PG Jrue Holiday was acquired via a trade with Boston, bringing a championship pedigree, and former Blazers star Damian Lillard was signed, as well. While Portland fans won't be on "Dame Time" until next season, he and Holiday will be helpful behind the scenes, guiding the team's young core. Deandre Ayton's exit also opened up the door for second-year center Donovan Clingan to make a bigger impact.

Thunder vs. Trail Blazers Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Thunder vs. Trail Blazers

  • Portland +5 (4 Units)

The visitors are playing a back-to-back, and it could be a challenging one. They play the Clippers on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, which will be a chore defensively. LA averages the longest offensive possession length in the NBA, which will be taxing on OKC's defense. Then, they'll fly to Portland, where they will face one of the highest-tempo teams in the league. The Blazers' defense will come to play, too. They have active hands (1st in opponent turnover percentage) and force the opposition to challenge them in the paint, where they rank 11th in rim defense. Portland allows the second-fewest mid-range attempts and fourth-fewest three-point attempts, so the road-weary Thunder will likely need to battle inside for four quarters to win this game.

OKC covered the spread in blowout wins over bad Washington and New Orleans teams in its last two games, but was just 1-4 ATS in its first five games of the season. Five points is a small number, but I lean toward the home team's side against the spread on Wednesday.

Over/Under Pick for Thunder vs. Trail Blazers

  • Under 228 (4 Units)

The home team prefers a high-tempo style of play, but they're inefficient offensively and will struggle against the league's top defensive squad. The Trail Blazers are average around the rim (17th), but rank 29th in mid-range percentage and 25th in three-point percentage. That's a concern against an OKC defense ranked fourth in rim defense and third in two-point defense this season. The Thunder don't allow many shot attempts inside the arc, forcing their opponents to settle for three-pointers. That's a sound strategy for stopping the Trail Blazers.

On the other end of the court, Oklahoma City is slow-tempo (27th in pace). Portland will be a solid defensive team in 2025-26, building off its strong performance in the second half of last season (top-three defense over the final 41 games). The Thunder typically take good care of the basketball, but they will be challenged on the perimeter by a more rested and pesky Blazers defense.

I anticipate a competitive, lower-scoring game on Wednesday.
