The Jazz play without rest
Sunday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the 5-10 Utah Jazz hosted the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday night, looking to avoid their third straight loss. In their previous two outings, the Jazz have lost at the Lakers 140-126 and to the Oklahoma City Thunder 144-112.
Last Friday, the Jazz had a one-point halftime lead over the mighty Thunder. OKC outscored Utah 77-44 in the second half and covered a 16.5-point spread with ease. It was another ugly defensive display from the Jazz, as OKC shot 61.4% from the field (23-for-37 from deep).
Utah allows 121.8 points per 100 possessions (26th in the NBA) and scores 114.8 points in return (21st). Lauri Markkanen leads the way for the Jazz with 29.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while Keyonte George adds 22.8 points and 7.1 assists a night.
Key Injury Report for Jazz:
none.
The Warriors look to snap their three-game skid
The Golden State Warriors fell to 9-9 on the season following Friday’s 127-123 home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. It was their third defeat in a row, as the Warriors lost at the Orlando Magic 121-113 and the Miami Heat 110-96 in their previous two outings.
Golden State blew an 11-point third-quarter lead against Portland. The Warriors went 17-for-43 from downtown and committed seven fewer turnovers than Portland (21-14), but they allowed a whopping 21 offensive rebounds to the Trail Blazers.
Stephen Curry dropped 38 points on the Blazers. Curry averages 28.6 points and 4.1 assists, while Jimmy Butler tallies 20.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. The Warriors score just 113.6 points per 100 possessions (23rd in the NBA) and surrender 113.7 points in return (tied for 12th).
Key Injury Report for Warriors:
- C Al Horford (back) is out for a week.
- F Jonathan Kuminga (knee) is out for a week.
- F Draymond Green (foot) is questionable.
Jazz vs. Warriors Pick
Spread Pick for Jazz vs. Warriors
- Golden State Warriors (4 units)
The Jazz lost Walker Kessler for the season, which hurt their defense a lot. Utah is 26th in the NBA in opposing 2-point percentage (58.2%) and 25th in opposing 3-point percentage (38.0%). The Jazz allow the most 3-pointers per 100 possessions (15.4), so I have to take the Warriors.
Golden State leads the league in 3-point rate (.505) and ranks 11th in 3-point percentage (36.9%). The Warriors hit 15.9 triples per 100 possessions (also 1st). I expect them to torture the Jazz even if Jonathan Kuminga (knee) and Al Horford (undisclosed) don’t play. Utah is turnover-prone, and Golden State is third in the league in defensive turnover percentage (14.7%).
Over/Under Pick for Jazz vs. Warriors
- Over (4 units)
The Jazz have allowed 132 or more points in four straight outings, excluding their Sunday clash against the Lakers. Utah’s defense is horrendous, as I already noted above, and the Warriors should have a field day.
Hereof, give me the over on the total. Utah is ninth in the league in pace (101.5 possessions per 48 minutes), and Golden State is 15th (100.5). The Warriors will push the ball in transition whenever they can, looking to take full advantage of Utah’s defensive flaws.
Utah leans on 3-pointers a lot, too. The Jazz rank sixth in 3-point rate, though they make just 33.7% of their shots from deep (25th).
