Golden State Hopes for Another Run at the Title

The Golden State Warriors pushed their chips in this offseason, resigning Jonathan Kuminga and adding Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Seth Curry. This is on the heels of trading for all-star guard Jimmy Butler at last year’s deadline. Thus far, the results have been mixed. The Warriors are 11-12 and in 8th place in the conference. The Warriors come in with two straight losses and losses in three of their last four games, including a 99-98 loss to Philadelphia on the road on Thursday night. The Warriors, playing without Steph Curry and Butler, and losing Draymond Green in the second quarter to a foot injury, fell behind by as many as 24 points. They rallied back but let in the go-ahead score with just over three seconds left and a potential game-winning layup blocked as time expired. Pat Spencer led the Warriors with 16 points.

The Warriors have struggled with injuries lately, and that is reflected in their recent record. They’ll head into Cleveland ranked 22nd in the league in scoring. They are 17th in the NBA in scoring margin. The team is 23rd in offensive efficiency and 26th in field goal shooting. The Warriors rank 15th in 3-point field goal percentage and are just 29th in points in the paint. The Warriors are ranked 6th in scoring defense. They are 7th in defensive efficiency and 15th in field goal defense. The Warriors are 8th in 3-point defense. They are last in the league in rebounding and just 27th in turnovers per game.

Key Injuries: G Seth Curry, G De’Anthony Melton, F Draymond Green, and F Jimmy Butler are all GTD. F Alex Toohey, C Al Horford, and G Steph Curry are out.

Slow Start for Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers stormed through the Eastern Conference in 2024-25, finishing with the best record and the #1 seed in the playoffs. The Cavs were unceremoniously dumped in the second round of the playoffs, but brought back all the key members of last year’s team to take a run at it again this season. They have not started with the same fire this season and are currently 8th in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs have lost four of five games, including a 122-110 loss to the Blazers on Thursday. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavs with 33 points, and Evan Mobley added 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers surprised teams last season with one of the more dominant offenses in the NBA. Thus far this season, the Cavs rank 10th in the NBA in scoring. They are 14th in scoring margin. The Cavs are 12th in offensive efficiency and 20th in field goal shooting. They are just 22nd in 3-point shooting thus far. The Cavs prefer to play along the perimeter, ranked just 24th in the league in points in the paint. Defensively, the Cavs are ranked 14th in scoring defense. They are 13th in defensive efficiency and 13th in field goal defense. The Cavs are just 18th in 3-point defense. They trump the Warriors in two key areas: rebounding and turnovers. The Cavs are 2nd in the NBA in rebounding and sixth in fewest turnovers per game.

Key Injuries: G Darius Garland, G Max Strus, C Jarrett Allen, G Sam Merrill, and G Tyrese Proctor are out.

Warriors vs. Cavaliers Pick

Point Spread Pick for Warriors at Cavs

  • Cavs minus the points (4 units)

Despite playing the second night of a back-to-back, the Cavs are a bad matchup for the injured Warriors. Cleveland protects the ball well and should dominate the Warriors on the glass, with the league’s second-best rebounding team. If Green is unable to go, that advantage will be magnified in favor of the Cavs on the glass. The Warriors are just 22nd in the NBA in scoring and will be down two of their top scorers in Curry and Butler. The Cavs should be able to play with some pace in this game, with the dominance they have on the glass. They play at a quicker pace than the Warriors and can get out and run with the Warriors’ difficulties with turnovers. The Cavs will take down the struggling Warriors on Saturday night.

Take the Cavs minus the points.

Over/Under Pick for Warriors at Cavs

  • Over (4 units)

The Cavs are 10th in the NBA in scoring and should get some quality looks against the Warriors’ depleted lineup. They should also get plenty of second-chance shots against the league’s worst rebounding team. The Warriors also turn the ball over frequently, which should set the Cavs up for some easy baskets. Both teams rely heavily on perimeter shooting, with each in the bottom 10 in points in the paint. A high number of three-point shots should help the total.

Take the over.
