Washington's offense played well, but its defense needs help
The Washington Wizards scored 120 points on opening night but gave up 133 on the road to the Milwaukee Bucks. Washington shot 46.9% overall and 40.5% from 3-point territory but struggled at the charity stripe, making just 57.9% of their free throws. Washington grabbed 56 rebounds compared to 46 by Milwaukee, including 13 offensive rebounds. The Wizards committed too many turnovers with 13 and gave up 17 points off turnovers. Washington made five steals and blocked four shots. Washington needs to tighten up its half-court defense and give up fewer open looks if the Wizards hope to win on the road Friday at Dallas.
Khris Middleton was the leading scorer for Washington with 23 points, making nine of 14 shots, including 3-for-5 from 3-point territory. Alex Sarr scored only 10 points but grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Wizards on the boards, while Kyshawn George was second in scoring with 21 points and handed out a team-high four assists. Washington had six players score in double figures.

Ryan Nembhard led Dallas in assists with five while playing just 16 minutes. Washington Wizards vs. Dallas Mavericks Pick
Spread Pick for Wizards vs. Mavericks
- Washington Wizards +12.5 (4 units)
The Dallas Mavericks will play without star Kyrie Irving (knee), as well as Daniel Gafford (ankle) and Dante Exum (knee). The Mavericks missed Irving in their 32-point loss on opening night, and without Irving on Friday, will have a tough time holding off the Washington Wizards at home, let alone covering a double-digit spread. Washington lost its season opener to Milwaukee, but shot well at 46.9% overall and 40.5% from long distance. Washington trailed by 19 points at halftime, but whittled that deficit down to just 11 points through three quarters; however, the Wizards ran out of gas in the final stanza. Against an injury-depleted Dallas team, the Wizards, led by Alex Sarr and veterans Khris Middleton and CJ McCollum, will play well enough to cover the spread. Washington has covered the spread in five of its last six games played on the road against Dallas.
Over/Under Pick for Wizards vs. Mavericks
- Over 227.5 (4 units)
A combined 153 points were scored in Washington's opening game loss to Milwaukee. Washington shot well, hitting 40.5% of its three-point attempts and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to have several second look opportunities, which also should be the case against Dallas, as the Mavericks are without one of their best rebounders, Daniel Gafford. Dallas struggles on opening night with just 92 points, but will bounce back with a strong effort from Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Cooper Flagg, and PJ Washington, which will result in the Mavericks scoring well over 100 points.
