Washington continues its rebuild, but it should be more competitive
The Washington Wizards were 15-67 in 2023-24 and followed that last season with an 18-64 mark. Last season, rookies played 35% of the time, and the Wizards were outscored by an average of 12.4 points per game. However, Washington has a strong foundation to build around in Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and off-season acquisition Cam Whitmore (questionable).Β Washington re-signed Khris Middleton, who gives the Wizards solid court leadership. The Wizards added Marvin Bagley III, Malaki Branham, Dillon Jones, CJ McCollum, and Whitmore. In the NBA draft, Washington took Tre Johnson at 6th overall, followed by Will Riley and Jamir Watkins. The Wizards no longer have Saddiq Bey, Malcolm Brogdon, Richaun Holmes, Jordan Poole, Marcus Smart, and Blake Wesley.
The additions of CJ McCollum and Cam Whitmore, along with second-year players Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington, as well as rookie Tre Johnson, give Washington fans some sign of hope for the future, but that may not be as early as 2025-26. Head coach Brian Keefe will have to balance playing time for veterans while not holding back the young stars, who are the future of the franchise. Sarr is a key player in Washington's success, averaging 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game last season as a rookie.
Milwaukee has rebuilt its roster around Antetokounmpo
The Milwaukee Bucks have gone four consecutive seasons without returning to the championship stage of the NBA after winning the title in 2021. Last season, after a slow start, the Bucks rebounded and finished 5th in the East, but for the third consecutive season, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Star Giannis Antetokounmpo returns for his 13th season. Off-season additions included Myles Turner, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Cole Anthony, and Gary Harris (questionable). Milwaukee took Bogoljub Markovic with the 47th pick of the NBA Draft. Pat Connaughton, Damian Lillard, Brook Lopez, and Chris Livingston are no longer with the Bucks.

Milwaukee started rebuilding its roster even before last season was over, when it dealt Khris Middleton to Washington in exchange for Kyle Kuzma, but the biggest change came in July when Lillard was waived to sign free agent Turner from Indiana. Turner is likely to help Giannis by taking away some of the responsibility of rebounding and rim protection while allowing Antetokounmpo to stretch the floor even more, making the star even better on offense as well as on defense.
Washington Wizards vs. Milwaukee Bucks Pick
Spread Pick for Wizards vs. Bucks
- Milwaukee Bucks -9.5 (5 units)
The Washington Wizards will be more competitive this season with their top two young players having a full season under their belt in addition to veteran leadership, but face a tough challenge on opening night against the Milwaukee Bucks. This is a very young team that is still in a rebuilding mode. Milwaukee has its star Giannis Antetokounmpo back, along with offseason acquisition Myles Turner. Milwaukee will use its retooled backcourt to feed Antetokounmpo, and Turner will become Milwaukee's new rim protector as he is one of the best shot blockers in the league, and will also average double figures on the glass. Washington's mix of new faces, young talent, and veterans will need time to gel as a unit before becoming somewhat competitive.
Over/Under Pick for Washington Wizards vs. Milwaukee Bucks
- Over 228.5 (4 units)
Milwaukee will continue to play an uptempo style under coach Doc Rivers. Milwaukee's backcourt, which includes Kevin Porter Jr, AJ Green, Gary Trent Jr, and Cole Anthony, will push play from start to finish. Washington's young guns will also push play as they will look to put up as many shots as possible in an attempt to remain close, in hopes of having a chance to steal a victory late in the 4th quarter.
