Washington pushed Philadelphia to OT on Tuesday
Washington (1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS, and 3-1 O/U) suffered a fourth-quarter collapse in Philly, as they were outscored 32-16. The Wizards scored the first five points of overtime, but couldn't regain their momentum, blowing a game they led by as many as 19 points. Washington had eight players in double figures by the end of the third quarter, but was cold down the stretch. Philadelphia shot 45 percent from the field, but found its way to the charity stripe a lot (32-for-37 FT shooting).
The Wizards went 18-64 last season, finishing 15th in the Eastern Conference. They missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season and the sixth time in the last seven. Washington was in a clear rebuild, as rookies accounted for 35 percent of the team's minutes. That said, there is optimism that the squad has a bright future, with ten former first-round picks getting their feet wet.

Washington made a few moves to resign and acquire veteran players this offseason, as well. Khris Middleton picked up his player option, and CJ McCollum was brought in via a trade with New Orleans, giving the Wiz two former All-Stars to lead the group. The franchise also let Malcolm Brogdon (free agent), Jordan Poole (trade), and Marcus Smart (waived) leave, with youngsters Cam Whitmore (20th pick in the 2023 NBA draft) and Tre Johnson (sixth pick in the 2025 draft) coming in. Big man Alex Sarr is the center piece of the Wizards' rebuild after he averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 blocks as a rookie.
Washington Wizards Basketball Injury Report:Β No new injuries to report for Thursday's game against the Thunder. Bilal Coulibaly (finger) is expected to make his season debut for the Wizards.
Oklahoma City is off to an undefeated start
Oklahoma City (5-0 SU, 1-4 ATS, and 2-3 O/U) battled back to beat Sacramento on Tuesday in a game it trailed for most of the night. The Thunder outscored the Kings 27-18 in the final quarter, as SG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander overcame a poor third-quarter performance to lead the home team to the win. OKC was playing a back-to-back after defeating Dallas on Monday and was without big man Chet Holmgren. The Thunder were off the mark from long range (14-for-44), but outscored the Kings 52-34 in the paint.
OKC won its first NBA championship in 2024-25 after finishing first in the Western Conference with a 68-14 regular-season record. Gilgeous-Alexander was awarded MVP honors for his dominant play (32.7 PPG, 6.4 APG, and 5.0 RPG), but it was a true team effort, as the Thunder set NBA records for the highest-ever point differential and most double-digit wins. With 95 percent of the minutes from last season's squad returning, Oklahoma City is expected to contend for the league's first back-to-back championship since 2017-18 (Golden State).
The Thunder were the youngest team in the NBA last season, and management has committed to the future, inking Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Holmgren to long-term extensions. For a franchise that once let Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook get away, that was a welcome sight for fans. As long as the team's stars can stay healthy, there's no reason to believe OKC won't be a title contender this season and in the years to come.
Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball Injury Report:Β C Chet Holmgren (back), SG Isaiah Joe (knee), and SG Jalen Williams (wrist) are day-to-day.
Wizards vs. Thunder Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Wizards vs. Thunder
- Oklahoma City to cover spread (4 Units)
I expect Holmgren to suit up after sitting out the second game of Tuesday's back-to-back, giving OKC a big body to defend Sarr. His presence would boost a Thunder lineup that's been without the All-Star Williams and key rotation piece Joe to start the season. While they haven't been covering the spread, the home team still ranks 9th in offensive rating and 1st in defensive rating. They take great care of the basketball (2nd in turnover percentage) and have been tough to get shots up against inside the arc, ranking 1st in opponent mid-range attempts and 4th in rim attempts. Washington kept it close against Philadelphia, but it's still a team without playmakers capable of going head-to-head with the champs. The Wizards rank last in offensive rating and 26th in defensive rating.
Over/Under Pick for Wizards vs. Thunder
- Over (5 Units)
I expect Washington to push the tempo on Thursday, as the visitors rank fifth in pace with the fourth-shortest average offensive possession length (13.1 seconds). The Wizards have shot a high percentage (38.1%) from beyond the arc and take good care of the basketball (9th in TO%), too. With more possessions, the Thunder will score plenty of points, working the Wiz inside the arc (9th in 2PT%). I also expect Oklahoma City to get to the free-throw line more than usual (Washington ranks 22nd in opponent FT rate), where it's reliable to knock down its shots (3rd in FT%).
The over is 8-2 in the previous ten meetings between these teams, including 7-0 in the last seven games. I expect that trend to continue on Thursday in OKC!
