Browns vs. Jets Matchup

Browns are searching for answers on offense

Cleveland (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS, and 4-4 O/U) was off last week and lost 32-13 to New England on October 26. The Browns are on a 12-game road losing streak. The team's roster is mostly the same after Tuesday's trade deadline, but there have been changes. Head coach Kevin Stefanski handed play-calling duties to first-year coordinator Tommy Rees this week, hoping to spark a lifeless Browns offense ahead of Sunday's matchup versus New York.

The Browns were unable to build off their 31-6 win over Miami despite taking a first-quarter lead over the Patriots. They were outscored 27-0 in the next two quarters, as Pats QB Drake Maye passed for three scores and the run game accounted for 177 yards (5.1 YPC). Cleveland wasn't totally overwhelmed defensively, as DE Myles Garrett tallied a franchise-record five sacks, but the offense was underwhelming. Rookie QB Dillon Gabriel averaged just 4.5 yards per pass with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while the Browns' run game produced 68 yards. Cleveland was a combined 3-for-14 on third and fourth down.

โ€œWith a young quarterback, you understand that thereโ€™s going to be ups and downs,โ€ Stefanski said of Gabriel, who will remain the team's starter.

The Oregon product Gabriel has completed 59.9 percent of his passes (fourth-lowest among starting QBs) for 702 yards, five touchdowns, and two picks in six games (117.0 yards/game). His top receiving targets are TE Harold Fannin Jr. (38 receptions for 352 yards and two TDs), TE David Njoku (27 receptions for 260 yards and two TDs), and WR Jerry Jeudy (22 receptions for 257 yards). Rookie RB Quinshon Judkins paces the Browns' ground game with 118 carries for 486 yards and five scores.

Cleveland scores 15.8 points per game (30th) and averages 263.5 total yards (31st), including 174.0 passing yards (29th) and 89.5 rushing yards (28th). The Browns' defense surrenders 23.0 points (18th) and 276.9 total yards (2nd), including 182.6 passing yards (5th) and 94.3 rushing yards (9th).

Can New York build off its first victory of the season?

New York (1-7 SU, 4-4 ATS, and 5-3 O/U) had a bye last week and beat Cincinnati 39-38 on October 26. The team made a couple of significant moves at Tuesday's trade deadline, sending star CB Sauce Gardner to Indianapolis and star DT Quinnen Williams to Dallas for future draft picks.

The Jets trailed 31-16 after three quarters in Cincy, but rallied behind RB Breece Hall, who rushed for two second-half touchdowns and threw a four-yard TD pass to TE Mason Taylor with 1:54 left. New York gained over 500 total yards, including a season-high 254 rushing yards. They were a combined 9-for-18 on third and fourth down in the comeback victory.

โ€œIt was amazing to get 0-7 off our back,โ€ Jets DE Jermaine Johnsonย said. "Everybody was ecstatic. Everybody was emotional. The first one is the hardest one. Weโ€™re excited to move on from here.โ€

Jets QB Justin Fields has passed for 1,089 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions this season. He has completed 64.1 percent of his attempts and has rushed for 288 yards and three scores. The Ohio State product appeared headed for a benching, but made the start against the Bengals with Tyrod Taylor out with a knee injury. Taylor (379 passing yards with three TDs and three INTs) was back at practice this week, but head coach Aaron Glenn was mum on who will be QB1 against Cleveland. New York's top receiving target is WR Garrett Wilson (36 receptions for 395 yards and four TDs), and Hall (117 carries for 581 yards and two TDs) paces the ground game.

NY scores 21.0 points per game (25th) and averages 300.1 total yards (25th), including 156.5 passing yards (32nd) and 143.6 rushing yards (3rd). The Jets' defense allows 27.6 points (27th) and 335.4 total yards (21st), including 199.6 passing yards (11th) and 135.8 rushing yards (26th).

Browns vs. Jets Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Browns vs. Jets

  • New York +2.5 (5 Units)

The Jets traded away a couple of stars, so their defense couldn't possibly play well, right? Let's be honest, New York wasn't playing well with them. While some will project a poor performance from the home team without Gardner and Williams, I believe the unit will play with energy on Sunday. The remaining players will relish their opportunities against an ineffective Cleveland offense, giving New York's offense a shot to win the game. I like the Jets' defensive backs, as Brandon Stephens has been excellent, Jarvis Brownlee has been up for the challenge since arriving midseason from Tennessee, and Azareye'h Thomas has fared well since getting tossed into the fire a couple of weeks ago.

On the other side of the ball, New York could surprise on Sunday. The visitors have an intimidating pass rush, but Fields' dual-threat ability will help counter that. With designed runs for its mobile QB and a heavy dose of Hall, the ground game could be more effective than most teams have been against Cleveland's top ten run defense. The likely return of Wilson would boost the passing game, and I wouldn't count out a solid first impression by WR Adonai Mitchell, whom the Jets acquired in the Gardner deal. The former second-round pick flashed in college at Texas, hauling in 11 touchdowns in 14 games.

Over/Under Pick for Browns vs. Jets

  • Over 37.5 (4 Units)

I lean towards the over. The stats will point most casual bettors to the under, but I don't see much breathing room to cash that bet with the total set at just 37.5 points. As poorly as the Browns have played on offense, the total has reached 37 or more points in four of Cleveland's last five games. There's always the chance that Rees jumpstarts the Browns offense, and both teams are well-rested after having last week off. New York has also surpassed this game's total in six of its eight games. The Jets and Browns have underwhelmed on offense, but their defenses haven't been shutdown units, either. Let's bet on the over.
