Bears vs. 49ers prediction

Chicago Bears (11-4) vs. San Francisco 49ers (11-4)

Week 17 of the 2025 NFL season has arrived, and in this preview, we are breaking down Sunday Night Football from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, to get you the Bears vs. 49ers prediction. The stake is huge in this game, even though both teams have already clinched the playoff berth.

The No. 1 seed in the NFC is still up for grabs, as the Bears meet the 49ers for the second straight season. Last year, the 49ers trounced the Bears 38-13 as 3-point home favorites, and the game flew over the 43.5-point line.

Sunday Night Football kicks off at 8:20 PM ET, so let’s take a closer look at this Bears vs. 49ers prediction, one of our NFL picks for Week 17. Once more, the 49ers are 3-point home favorites, while the total sits at 51.5 points.

The Bears eye their third straight win

The Chicago Bears (11-4; 10-5 ATS; 7-7-1 O/U) have only dropped one of their previous eight games overall. After stopping their five-game winning streak with a 28-21 defeat at the Green Bay Packers in Week 14, the Bears have won consecutive home games over the Cleveland Browns 31-3 and the Packers 22-16 in overtime.

Last week, the Bears outlasted the Packers as 1-point home favorites to get one step closer to their first NFC North title since 2018. Chicago overcame a 10-point deficit, as the Bears were down 16-6 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Cairo Santos hit a 43-yard field goal with 1:59 remaining. Then, Josh Blakwell recovered an onside kick to give his team a chance. Caleb Williams found Jahdae Walker in the end zone with 24 seconds left on the clock, and Santos tied the game before Williams threw another TD pass in overtime, this time to DJ Moore.

Williams went 19-of-34 for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Moore had five receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown, and the Bears rushed 26 times for 150 yards. It was their sixth win this season after trailing in the final two minutes.

“This is a special group,” Chicago head coach Ben Johnson said. “I felt that early in the season. You get with some of those wins — the Raiders game and the Washington game — and you start feeling it, the belief coming. This group — I'm talking about coaches and players combined — it’s rare. It really is.”

Williams has thrown for 3,400 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions this season. D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai have combined for 1,724 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, while Moore and Rome Odunze have combined for 1,325 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns. Odunze missed three straight games with a foot injury and is questionable for Week 17.

The Bears score 25.8 points per game (10th in the NFL) and allow 23.6 points in return (19th). Their defense is 27th in the league in rushing yards (131.0 per game), 18th in passing yards (217.1), 13th in 3rd down conversion (38.7%), and ninth in red-zone conversion (54.2%). Chicago leads the NFL in takeaways with 31.

The 49ers are on a five-game win streak

Since a 42-26 home loss against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10, the San Francisco 49ers (11-4; 10-5 ATS; 9-6 O/U) have won five straight contests. During that stretch, the Niners have beaten the Arizona Cardinals 41-22, the Carolina Panthers 20-9, the Cleveland Browns 26-8, the Tennessee Titans 37-24, and the Indianapolis Colts 48-27.

Last Monday, the Niners trounced the Colts as 4.5-point road favorites. San Francisco outgained Indianapolis 440-312 in total yards and won the turnover battle 2-1. The Niners’ punter didn’t take the field, which tells you a lot about their offensive performance.

Brock Purdy went 25-of-34 for 295 yards, career-high five touchdowns, and an interception. Christian McCaffrey caught six passes for 29 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 21 times for 117 yards, and George Kittle had seven receptions for 115 yards and a TD.

“He was awesome, he played really well,” San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said, describing Purdy's play. "I got on him for a couple of throws he missed, but it was pretty close to a perfect game. He did a hell of a job.”

Purdy has thrown for 1,737 yards, 17 touchdowns, and eight interceptions across seven starts this season. McCaffrey has amassed 1,888 yards from scrimmage and 16 touchdowns, while Kittle has caught 52 passes for 599 yards and seven touchdowns.

Kittle suffered an ankle injury last Monday and is questionable for the upcoming clash against the Bears. He didn’t practice on Thursday, while cornerback Renardo Green and defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos were both limited in practice. San Francisco cannot count on WR Brandon Aiyuk, DE Nick Bosa, and LB Fred Warner, who are all done for the season.

The 49ers score 26.1 points per game (9th in the NFL) and surrender 21.3 points in return (12th). Their defense is eighth in the league in rushing yards (102.9 per game), 24th in passing yards (229.3), 14th in 3rd down conversion (38.9%), and 17th in red-zone conversion (58.7%). The Niners have recorded 16 takeaways this season (tied for 21st).

Spread Pick for Bears vs. 49ers

  • Chicago Bears +3.0 (5 units)

The 49ers desperately need George Kittle on the field. He’s Brock Purdy’s favorite target. With Kittle and Christian McCaffrey in the lineup, the 49ers are arguably one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the league. But even if Kittle suits up, the Bears should be able to keep it close on the back of their offense.

The Niners have done a great job in Nick Bosa’s and Fred Warner’s absence. Yet, their defense leaves a lot to be desired. The 49ers’ pass rush is one of the weakest in the NFL, and San Francisco is dead last in the league in sacks (18). The Bears will find a way to move the chains even if Rome Odunze remains on the sidelines.

Both teams have done a great job against the number lately. The 49ers have covered the spread in five straight outings, and the Bears have gone 5-1 ATS in their last six showings. Chicago is 5-2 SU and ATS in its past seven outings as an underdog.

Over/Under Pick for Bears vs. 49ers

  • Over 51.5 (5 units)

As I noted, the Bears lead the NFL in takeaways, but their defense has some flaws. Chicago allows 5.0 yards per carry (29th in the league), and the Bears have recorded just 60 tackles for loss this season (28th).

On the other side, the 49ers allow too many passing yards. Their pass rush has been awful thus far, so Caleb Williams should have a field day. I expect both teams to move the chains frequently and provide a high-scoring affair.

The 49ers have scored at least 26 points in six of their previous seven games overall. Five of those seven tilts have seen way more than 51 points on the scoreboard. On the other hand, the under is 5-2 in Chicago’s last seven games overall.
