Cowboys vs. Eagles Prediction

As the NFL offseason fades in the rear-view mirror, the opening week of the 2025 NFL season brings us an NFC East matchup when the Dallas Cowboys battle the Philadelphia Eagles in the City of Brotherly Love, Thursday night, and we have you covered with our Cowboys vs. Eagles prediction. Dallas closed the 2024 regular season with a 7-10 mark to finish third in the division and missed the playoffs. Philadelphia went 14-3 in the regular season last year and steamrolled their way to the Lombardi Trophy as it beat the Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Cowboys own a 71-57 advantage, but the Eagles took both matchups last season, including a 41-7 home win in the most recent matchup on December 29, 2024. Dallas Hoping to Pull Upset in Season Opener

Dallas struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season and it showed on the field. The Cowboys finished the 2024 season 7-10 and ended up third in the NFC East, missing the postseason. It also led to the end of the Mike McCarthy era in Dallas as he was let go after five seasons and three playoff appearances. In his stead, Brian Schottenheimer, who was the offensive coordinator the last two seasons, takes over the coaching reins. There are new faces all over the roster as backup quarterbacks Trey Lance and Cooper Rush, starting running back Rico Dowdle, wide receiver Brandin Cooks, guard Zack Martin and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence are all gone. Dallas did add running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders along with receiver George Pickens, who they acquired in a deal with Pittsburgh to add a secondary receiver alongside CeeDee Lamb. Last week, Dallas stunned the football world by dealing Micah Parsons to Green Bay for Kenny Clark and two first-round picks.

Last season, the Cowboys were 11th in the league in passing offense with 227.2 yards per contest. Dallas was 27th in rushing offense with 100.3 yards per game last season. The Cowboys were 21st in scoring offense as they averaged 20.6 points a night. Dallas finished 31st in the league in scoring defense as they gave up an average of 27.5 points a contest. Dak Prescott hit 185 of 286 passes for 1,978 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year last season before suffering a torn hamstring that ended his campaign. He was sacked 21 times for 112 yards in losses while adding 54 yards plus a score on the ground. Joe Milton III (22 of 29, 241 yards, TD, 16 rush yards, TD with New England) is the backup. Javontae Williams (139 carries, 513 yards, four TD with Denver) and Miles Sanders (55 carries, 205 yards, two TD for Carolina) are the top two backs in the run game. CeeDee Lamb led the team with 101 receptions for 1,194 yards and six touchdowns last season. KaVontae Turpin (31 grabs, 420 yards, two TD), Jalen Tolbert (49 receptions, 610 yards, seven TD), George Pickens (59 catches, 900 yards, three TD with Pittsburgh) and tight end Jake Ferguson (59 grabs, 494 yards) will be other key targets in the passing game this season. Brandon Aubrey was 30 of 30 on extra point attempts and 40 of 47 on field goal attempts with a long of 65 last season.

Eagles Try to Start Defense of Lombardi Trophy at Home

Philadelphia had a big season as they rolled to the NFC East crown before downing Green Bay, the Rams and Washington in the NFC playoffs before battering Kansas City in Super Bowl LIX in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score may have indicated. The Eagles now look to defend their title but they’ll have to replace some key contributors, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Milton Williams, Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Garrett Bradbury and Isaiah Rodgers are gone from last season’s unit. While there is plenty of talent in Vic Fangio’s defense, the depth did take a bit of a hit and we’ll see how the younger guys like Jihaad Campbell, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt, among others, fare with more playing time.

Last year, the Eagles were 29th in the league in passing offense with 187.9 yards per game and 2nd in rushing offense with 179.3 yards per contest. Philadelphia stood 7th in the league in scoring offense with 27.2 points per game, while they were 2nd in the league in scoring defense by allowing 17.8 points per contest. Jalen Hurts completed 248 of 361 passes for 2,903 yards with 18 touchdowns against five interceptions while getting sacked 38 times. He was second on the team on the ground with 150 carries for 630 yards and 14 scores. Tanner McKee (30 of 45, 323 yards, four TD) and Sam Howell (three of five, 14 yards, INT, two rush yards) are next on the depth chart. Saquon Barkley led the team on the ground with 345 carries for 2,005 yards and 13 scores. Will Shipley (30 carries, 82 yards) and A.J. Dillon (178 carries, 613 yards, two TD for Green Bay in 2023) are the next backs up on the depth chart for the Eagles. DeVonta Smith led the team with 68 receptions for 833 yards and eight scores on the year. A.J. Brown (67 catches, 1079 yards, seven TD), Dallas Goedert (42 grabs, 496 yards, TD), Barkley (33 catches, 278 yards, two TD) and Grant Calcaterra (24 grabs, 298 yards, TD) are all useful targets. Jake Elliott was 47 of 48 on extra point attempts and 28 of 36 on field goal attempts with a long of 50 last season. Six of his eight misses are from beyond 50 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles -7.5 (4 units)

Divisional games are usually entertaining and tend to be a bit chippy. This one is likely to be no different, especially after the Eagles won both meetings last season by a combined 75-13 margin. Dallas is trying to rebuild on the fly and fixing a defense that was second-worst in the league in scoring defense is going to be a challenge after dealing Parsons away. The Cowboys couldn’t slow the Eagles a season ago and with question marks on both sides of the ball, it’s tough to like their chances here. Look for Philadelphia to take care of business and roll to a victory here, starting their title defense off on the right foot.

Over 47.5 (4 units)

Last season, Dallas finished the regular season having gone over the total in 11 of their 17 games last season. As the visiting team last year, the Cowboys saw the over hit in five of their eight contests. They went over the total in their final three road games last season. Philadelphia saw the under go 10-7 in their 17 regular season tilts before going over in three of their four postseason games. At home, the Eagles stayed under the number in six of their nine regular season home games. Seven of the last 10 meetings between the teams have gone over the total. The Eagles put up at least 30 points here to push things over the total.
