Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers Picks and Prediction, Sunday, September 7, 2025
On Sunday, the Detroit Lions will play the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in an NFC North clash, and we have you ready to go with our Lions vs. Packers prediction. Kickoff from Green Bay, WI, is at 4:25 p.m. ET.
The Packers are one-point spread favorites, and the game total is 47 points scored.
Detroit and Green Bay met twice last season. The Lions were victorious on November 3 in Green Bay, jumping out to a 17-3 lead and never looking back, and came out on top at home on December 5, as Jake Bates hit a field goal as time expired. The Lions lead the series 6-4 straight-up and against the spread in the last ten meetings. The over was 6-4 in those games. Lions on a quest to put last season's playoff blunder behind them
Detroit had a magical season in 2024-25, with a franchise record 15-2 record that secured them the number one seed in the NFC Playoffs. It was an improvement from their 12-5 record the previous season, giving them consecutive NFC North division titles. However, their fairy tale story ended heartbreakingly, as the Lions were upset by Washington in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Will the Lions respond by winning the Super Bowl this season?
Detroit boasted the league's highest-scoring offense last season, so it makes sense that the team is running it back with 20 of its 22 starters returning. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to be the Chicago Bears' head coach, but new play-caller John Morton was a special assistant under Johnson in 2021, so he's equipped to handle the reins. QB Jared Goff is back to spread the football around to a wealth of skill position stars, including receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, tight end Sam LaPorta, and the running back tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Detroit also features one of the NFL's best offensive lines. In short, it would be surprising if the Lions aren't a top-three offense again this year.
The 2024-25 Detroit defense was stout, but the unit suffered injuries to six starters that limited its potential. Still, the Lions led the NFL in third-down defense and ranked second in opponent completion percentage. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is the new HC of the New York Jets, thrusting linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard into the role. He's likely to implement the same aggressive approach, utilizing man-heavy coverage schemes. Fortunately for him, most of last season's starters are back, and the defensive line appears more talented in 2025-26. That said, Za'Darius Smith is gone, and Levi Onwuzurike is out for the season, so there are questions about this unit.

Green Bay can make a major statement in Week 1
Green Bay finished 11-6 last season, improving on its 9-8 record in the 2023-24 season. The Packers finished third in a stacked NFC North division, reaching the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs, where they were the first domino toppled in Philadelphia's run towards the Super Bowl. With QB Jordan Love and RB Josh Jacobs back to lead the offense, Green Bay will once again be one of the league's most feared teams. Can they make progress in their quest for their next Super Bowl title?
Green Bay was hot mid-December of last season, tantalizing its fans who dreamed of seeing the team make a deep playoff run. Love was rolling, and the ground game was strong with Jacobs. Then, WR Christian Watson tore his ACL, taking away Love's speed threat, and the offense wasn't as dynamic. The Packers drafted the speedy field stretcher Matthew Golden in the first round of the draft to address this issue, and with a healthier starting lineup, they'll be a tough team to keep out of the endzone this season.
Green Bay only added two new defensive starters during the offseason, but one of the additions was a gigantic one: Dallas LB/DE Micah Parsons. The Packers ranked fifth in yards allowed last season, but their pass rush was average. The former Cowboys star (12 sacks last season) gives them an intimidating presence up front. The team's signing of slot corner Nate Hobbs was much-needed after the release of Jaire Alexander.

Lions vs. Packers Pick
Moneyline Pick for Lions vs. Packers
- Detroit Lions ML (5 Units)
The Packers are the most talked-about team in the NFL currently, as their addition of Parsons was a game-changer. The trade immediately shifted the betting odds in their favor to win the NFC North, and initially moved the odds of Sunday's matchup with the Lions from -1.5 to -2.5. While that number has come down since then, I still see the Detroit ML as the best side to take in this divisional battle.
Let's not forget: the Lions went 15-2 last season. That playoff loss was a tough pill to swallow for their fans, but it doesn't make last season a complete failure. The loss of their two coordinators has been overemphasized, in my opinion, as well. Detroit's offense will be dominant again, and the defense will be motivated to make a statement on the road on Sunday. The return of Aidan Hutchinson is a big deal, too.
Parsons hasn't done much on a football field since July due to his back. Star receiver Jayden Reed is also listed as questionable for Sunday with a foot injury. Green Bay is a team on the rise, but it hasn't peaked. Detroit has been reflecting on its playoff loss for months and is eager to remind people who won the North last season. I'll bet that the Lions have the last word this weekend.
Over/Under Pick for Lions vs. Packers
- Over 47 (4 Units)
Betting Trends: The over is 3-1 in the last two seasons' matchups between Detroit and Green Bay. The over is also 6-0 in the Lions' previous six September games against NFC North opponents.
Green Bay has a shiny new toy in Parsons, but I doubt he'll be game-ready to create havoc on Sunday. The Packers' secondary is also shaky following the departure of Alexander. Keisean Nixon is a mediocre starter, and Carrington Valentine is a solid backup, but how will he fare as a starter? He'll be thrown into the lion's den in Week 1. I also question how reliable Detroit will be defensively for four quarters, as it may take them a few weeks to find their footing with players returning from injury and a new coordinator. Love can sling it, and Jacobs is as tough to bring down as any running back in the game. Bet on the over!
