Lions vs. Commanders Matchup
The Lions hope to get back on track
The Detroit Lions (5-3; 5-3 ATS; 4-4 O/U) have dropped two of their previous three games overall, sandwiching a 24-9 victory to the Tampa Bay Lightning with a pair of losses at the Kansas City Chiefs, 30-1,7 and to the Minnesota Vikings 27-24.

Last Sunday, the Lions upset their fans, failing to beat the Vikings as 9.5-point home favorites. Detroit outgained Minnesota 305-258 in total yards, but the Lions allowed the Vikings to score three touchdowns on five red-zone attempts. Also, Detroit committed a season-high 10 penalties and struggled to rush efficiently, racking up just 65 yards on 20 carries.
“When you play poorly in all three phases of the game, that’s on the head coach,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said. “I didn’t have this team ready to play out of the bye. We did everything we needed to do to lose that game.”
Jared Goff completed 25 of his 37 passing attempts last Sunday, tossing for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He’s thrown for 1,915 yards, 17 touchdowns, and just three interceptions this season, and the Lions are second in the NFL in scoring offense (29.9 points per game).
On the other side of the ball, there’s a lot of room for improvement. The Lions’ defense ranks 21st in the league in red-zone percentage (63.0%). Detroit allows 22.3 points per game (tied for 13th) on 94.5 rushing yards (10th) and 200.3 passing yards (12th).
Safety Kerby Joseph missed the last two games with a knee injury and hasn’t practiced so far this week. He’s recorded three interceptions across six appearances this season. Offensive tackles Penei Sewell (shoulder) and Dan Skipper (back) were both limited in Thursday’s practice and are questionable for Week 10.
The Commanders’ season might be over
The Washington Commanders (3-6; 3-6 ATS; 4-4-1 O/U) are winless in four straight outings, and given their injury problems, the Commanders might be done for the season when it comes to being a playoff contender.
Running back Austin Ekeler, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, and cornerback Marshon Lattimore are all on the IR and won’t return this year. Wideout Luke McCaffrey (collarbone) will miss at least four weeks, while fellow WR Terry McLaurin (quad) is not expected to play against Detroit.
Moreover, QB Jayden Daniels sustained a dislocated elbow in a 38-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks this past Sunday. He’ll be out for a while, so Marcus Mariota will be under center in Week 10. Mariota has thrown for 639 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions across five appearances this season. He’s rushed 18 times for 122 yards and a touchdown.
The Commanders have only scored 21 points over their previous two showings. Before that heavy loss to Seattle, Washington suffered a 28-7 defeat at the Kansas City Chiefs. Mariota started against KC, throwing for 213 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.
Washington scores 22.3 points per game (20th in the NFL) and allows 26.2 points in return (22nd). The Commanders’ defense is 22nd in rushing yards (124.2 per game), 29th in passing yards (253.6), and 26th in red-zone percentage (66.7%).

Lions vs. Commanders Pick
Spread Pick for Lions vs. Commanders
- Detroit Lions -8.5 (5 units)
I’m not going to overthink this game at all. The Lions are an angry group following a home loss against the Vikings, and they certainly remember that home defeat against the Commanders in the divisional playoffs. I expect the Lions to trounce the Commanders.
Washington has too many injury problems. The Commanders miss their starting quarterback, and possibly their best wideout in Terry McLaurin, and a few important defensive pieces. Their defense will struggle to contain the Lions’ passing offense. Last week, the Commanders allowed Sam Darnold to go 16-of-16 for 282 yards and four touchdowns in the first half.
Detroit is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games overall and 6-2 in its previous eight dates with Washington. The Commanders are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall and 0-5 ATS in their previous five contests against conference rivals.
Over/Under Pick for Lions vs. Commanders
- Over 48.5 (5 units)
The Lions could easily drop 40 points on the Commanders. As I mentioned, the Commanders’ passing defense was awful last Sunday, and it has struggled all season. Jared Goff should have a field day in Week 10.
Hopefully, the Commanders will find a way to add to the scoreboard, though their offense makes the total a tricky bet. Yet, the Lions allow 4.1 yards per carry, and they’ve amassed just 35 tackles for loss this season, so the Commanders will lean on their ground game to get things going.
I would take the over. The Lions will be fired up to score as much as possible. They want to humiliate the Commanders and get revenge for that 45-31 loss from January.
