Houston Hopes to Continue Momentum
Trailing 29-10 heading into the fourth quarter, the Houston Texans rallied for 26 straight points to pull out a much-needed 36-29 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Houston. The Texans scored with 31 seconds left to take the lead and then added a fumble recovery for a touchdown as time expired to improve to 4-5 on the season and keep their playoff hopes intact.
“The key for our entire game was, no one blinked,” Head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “I told the guys last night it was going to be a heavyweight fight. I wanted us to continue forward, keep punching.”
Quarterback David Mills threw for 292 yards, subbing for injured CJ Stroud, out with a concussion. Mills threw for two touchdowns in the memorable fourth quarter and scrambled 14 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Wide receiver Nico Collins had a big day with seven catches for 136 yards and a critical 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter. In all, the Texans finished with 412 total yards. They were an efficient 10-of-15 on third down conversions and 1-of-2 on fourth down conversions.
On the defensive end, the Texans’ defense saved its best for last, blanking the Jaguars in the fourth quarter to allow for the incredible comeback. Despite the 29 points, the Texans held Jacksonville to just 212 total yards of offense. They forced two turnovers in the game, including the 32–yard Sheldon Rankins scoop and score as time expired. Azeez Al-Shaair led the team with eight tackles, and Danielle Hunter had a monster day with 3.5 sacks.
The Texans have struggled through injury and inconsistency thus far, but after last week’s huge comeback win, they are still alive in the playoff hunt. The team is 19th in the NFL in points per game. The Titans are 28th in rushing and 15th in passing. They are just 28th in red zone offense. The team is 18th in sacks allowed per game. On the defensive end, the Texans have been outstanding in several areas. They rank first in scoring defense. The Titans are eighth against the run and fourth against the pass. They rank 23rd in the league in red zone defense. The Titans are 13th in sacks per game. The team is 24th in penalty yards per game and an impressive fifth in turnover margin.
Key Injuries: PK Ka’imi Fairbairn, TE Dalton Schultz, LB Jake Hansen, and DE Denico Autry are questionable.
Titans Looking for Second Win of the Season
The Tennessee Titans lost for the eighth time in nine games on Sunday, falling to the visiting Los Angeles Chargers, 27-20. The Titans came out strong, building a 14-3 lead over the Chargers after one quarter. Things turned quickly, however, and the Titans trailed by three at the half. It was the fourth straight loss for the Titans overall and the third straight under interim head coach Mike McCoy.
“The big turning point obviously is getting stopped on the 1-yard line, then a big drive go down there and score so that's the difference,” McCoy said. "It’s frustrating to look at it because of the missed opportunities that we had early.”
It was another trying afternoon for last season’s #1 overall pick, quarterback Cam Ward. Ward failed to lead the Titans on any touchdown drives, with one touchdown scored on a Chimere Dike punt return and the other on a pick-six. He finished the day 12-of-21 for just 145 yards. He fumbled twice in the game, but the Titans were able to recover both. The Titans finished the day with just 209 yards of total offense. They were just 1-of-9 on third down conversions.
The Titans’ defense had a solid afternoon against the high-powered Chargers’ offense. They recorded a season-high six sacks, and linebacker Cody Barton intercepted Justin Herbert’s first pass of the day and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. Jihad Ward recorded 2.5 sacks in the game, and Cedric Gray finished with a game-high 16 tackles, including a sack. The Titans allowed 343 yards of total offense.
The Titans are at the bottom of the standings, and that reflects in the team’s statistics. The Titans come into this game ranked last in the NFL in points per game. They are last in rushing and 31st in passing. The team is last in red zone offense and last in sacks allowed per game. On the defensive end, the Titans are 30th in points allowed per game. They are 25th against the run and 17th against the pass. The Titans’ defense ranks 20th in red zone defense. They are 13th in sacks per contest. The Titans are 16th in penalty yards per game and ranks 20th in turnover margin.
Key Injuries: TE Chig Okonkwo, DE CJ Ravenell, WR Calvin Ridley, S Xavier Woods, and DT Jeffery Simmons are questionable.
Texans at Titans Spread Pick
Point Spread Prediction for Texans vs. Titans
- Rams -4.5 (4 units)
This is a must-win game for the Texans on Sunday. At 4-5, the Texans are battling for a playoff spot in a crowded field of AFC teams. They should have quarterback CJ Stroud back from concussion protocol on Sunday. Stroud was starting to find his stride before departing the Denver game under concussion protocol. He can exploit a Titans’ defense that is ranked just 30th in the NFL in points allowed per game. The Texans’ defense should also have a huge edge on Sunday. The Texans should be able to bring heavy pressure on Ward, particularly with the Titans ranked last in sacks allowed this season. The Texans’ defense forced two turnovers last week and should get a few more this week against the Titans’ inexperienced offense, ranked 20th in turnover margin. Houston will take care of business on the road and get to .500
Take the Texans -6.5
Over/Under Pick for Texans vs. Titans
- Under 37.5 (4 units)
The Titans have scored under 20 points in three of their last five games. That number would likely be four out of five, save for a defensive score and punt return last week. The Texans’ defense is first in the NFL in points against. They are a formidable 8th against the run and fourth against the pass. Expect Ryans to draw up some exotic defenses to confuse first-year QB Ward. Offensively, the Texans are just 19th in the league in points per game. They are also just 28th in red zone offense, usually settling for field goals.
