Texans Trying to Earn Back-to-Back Wins

Houston comes off a bye last week and hopes that it didn’t stunt the momentum of their blowout road win over Baltimore two weeks ago. The Texans improved to 2-3 on the season and stood third in the AFC South, 2.5 games behind the Colts for the top spot. Against Baltimore, Houston went down the field on their opening drive to score a touchdown and never let the Ravens even again. The Texans led 7-3 after the opening quarter and 24-3 at the half before cruising the rest of the way. Houston rolled up a 417-207 edge in total offense, picked up 27 first downs while allowing 12, owned time of possession by a 36:33 to 23:27 margin and forced three turnovers while not committing any in the contest.

On the year, Houston is tied for 21st in passing offense with 198.2 yards per game through the air, while they stand 16th in rushing offense with 116.2 yards per contest. Houston is 22nd in scoring offense with an average of 21.6 points per game, while they are 1st in scoring defense by allowing 12.2 points per contest. C.J. Stroud has completed 102 of 144 passes for 1,076 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He has been sacked 12 times while adding 122 yards on the ground. Seattle bounced back from a last-second loss to Tampa Bay as they downed Jacksonville on the road in their previous contest. The Seahawks improved to 4-2 on the year and are tied with the Rams and 49ers for the top spot in the NFC West. Against Jacksonville, Seattle trailed 6-0 after the opening quarter before reeling off 20 unanswered points to take control of the game. The Seahawks gave up a touchdown with 13 minutes to play before clamping down defensively, forcing three punts on the Jaguars’ final drives, to earn the win. Seattle owned a 346-273 edge in total offense, despite giving up 17 first downs while picking up 13 and losing time of possession 33:21 to 26:39 in the game. There were no turnovers by either side in the contest.

This season, the Seahawks are 4th in the league in passing offense as they average 252.2 yards per game through the air and 24th in rushing offense with 104.2 yards per contest on the ground. Seattle is 5th in the league in scoring offense with an average of 27.7 points per game and 6th in scoring defense by allowing 19.5 points per contest. Sam Darnold has completed 114 of 161 passes for 1,541 yards with 11 touchdowns against three interceptions. He has been sacked seven times while ranking third on the team with 40 rushing yards on the year. Drew Lock is two of three for 15 yards. Kenneth Walker III leads the team on the ground with 78 carries for 364 yards and three scores this season. Zach Charbonnet (60 carries, 156 yards, three touchdowns) is the second back in the system. Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the team with 42 receptions for 696 yards and three scores. Cooper Kupp (23 grabs, 261 yards, TD), tight end AJ Barner (17 catches, 205 yards, four TD) and Tory Horton (nine catches, 115 yards, three TD) are all over 100 receiving yards on the season. Jason Myers is 19 of 19 on extra point attempts and 11 of 14 on field goal attempts with a long of 56 this year.

Houston is rested after the bye, but their offense still leaves plenty to be desired to this point of the season. The Texans have relied mainly on their defense as Stroud has seemingly regressed this season. Chubb has been okay, but he’s not the back he was years ago. Meanwhile, Seattle has been solid this season, and Darnold has shown that last season’s success with Minnesota wasn’t a fluke. Smith-Njigba leads the league in receiving yards and Kupp provides a solid secondary option to work with offensively as well. Perhaps more importantly, the Seahawks could have their starting secondary intact this week, which works in their favor here. As a result, take Seattle at home in this contest.

The Texans didn’t go over 39 combined points in their first four games before combining for 54 points in their win over Baltimore. Seattle has split their six games in relation to the total this season. The Seahawks have gone over the number in two of their three home games on the year. Seattle has had their struggles against good defenses and that could slow their offensive production somewhat. We’ve seen the Texans have offensive issues so far this season and that helps keep this game under the total.
