Las Vegas Looks for Fresh Start

The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off a four-win season and are looking to rebuild their franchise with a new coach and quarterback. Pete Carroll takes over this team as a 73-year-old with an impressive resume. He is a Super Bowl Champion and a two-time National Champion in college as a coach, and will now look to bring his success to the Raiders. He will hand the team over to Geno Smith, who has turned his career from a backup to a reliable starter over the past several seasons.

Smith was a starter in Seattle over the past three seasons. Last year, he had a 21-15 TD-INT ratio while passing for 4,320 yards. He is still capable of running the ball, but it is not a primary option as he finished with 272 yards on the ground last season. There are new faces everywhere in Las Vegas, as Ashton Jenty will be their starting tailback as a first-round pick out of Boise State. He set the college football world on fire last season, but will now have to face NFL defenses as opposed to the Mountain West Conference. Raheem Mostert is a speedster out of the backfield who will be available here as well.

Jakobi Meyers had 87 catches for 1,029 yards last season and will be one of the top targets in the passing game. Brock Bowers is ready to blossom into one of the best tight ends in football after a rookie season where he went for 1,194 yards. The defense has plenty of new faces, by Maxx Crosby is still back as one of the league's premier pass rushers.

Patriots Also Hit Reset

The New England Patriots also had a four-win season last year and had to find a new coach in the offseason. They made one of the biggest splashes in the offseason, hiring Mike Vrabel after his year off, after leading the Titans. Vrabel was Coach of the Year in 2021 and was a three-time champion as a player for the Patriots. The Patriots have plenty invested in Drake Maye, as the team is hoping the 23-year-old can turn the corner and become a franchise quarterback.

Maye was their number three draft pick last season, and showed flashes of brilliance despite not being able to lead the Patriots out of fourth place. The 6'4, 225-pound quarterback has great size and finished last season with a 15-10 TD-INT ratio while going for 2,276 yards through the air. Maye rushed for 421 yards on the ground last season. The Patriots are expected to share carries out of the backfield, as Rhamondre Stevenson is back for another season with the team, and they added TreVeyon Henderson as a highly touted rookie out of Ohio State.

Stefon Diggs will be asked to be the top receiver for the team, though he is now 31 years old and trying to return from an ACL tear. Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper will be reliable tight ends in the passing game for Maye. Their secondary is struggling with early injuries, as Christian Gonzalez will miss this game as their most talented cornerback with a hamstring injury.

Spread pick for Raiders vs. Patriots

  • Raiders +2.5 (5 units)

The Raiders are the better team here and are getting points on the road. First, look at the quarterbacks: Geno Smith is a proven commodity, while Drake Maye is still trying to prove he belongs as a starter in this league. Smith will be able to adjust to life with a new coach quickly, as Maye will have to work with a defensively oriented coach for their first game together. The Raiders have youth and energy, and Jenty will provide a spark out of the backfield. New England has several injuries in their secondary, which Las Vegas will be able to expose as Brock Bowers continues to prove he could be the best tight end in football.

Take the Raiders plus the points.

Over/Under Pick for Raiders vs. Patriots

  • Over 43.5 (4 units)

The offenses will surprise everyone in this game, except for everyone who knows that neither defense is very strong. The Raiders have Maxx Crosby, but even with his strong pass rush, the Raiders are not deep at the second or third line of defense. Similarly, the Patriots have a new defensive coach, but not enough talent to continuously get stops here. Bill Belichick is one of the best defensive minds of the generation, and he just got cooked by TCU because he did not have the talent to keep up. Vrabel can coach, but he needs more guys to implement his strategy. This will be a high-scoring game with the most talented players on the offensive end.

Take the over.
