The Rams bounced back from their loss to San Francisco with a solid second-half performance to take down Baltimore. LA was mired by penalties, kicking woes, a turnover, and an injury to star WR Puka Nacua in the first half, resulting in a 3-3 tie at halftime. A pair of third-quarter touchdowns allowed them to pull away from the Lamar Jackson-less Ravens.
βI feel like we moved the ball up and down the field last week and had 400-something yards of offense and lost the game and felt pretty (bad) about it,β QB Matt Stafford said. βFelt good about this one. Nice job getting a win.β
Stafford leads Los Angeles into action with 1,684 passing yards (66.5% CMP%), 12 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He averages 8.1 yards per pass and 280.7 yards per game. The Georgia product's top receiving target, Nacua, will be sidelined this week, but veteran pass-catcher Davante Adams (26 receptions for 396 yards and three TDs) is available to pick up the slack. The Rams' run game is paced by fourth-year pro Kyren Williams (95 carries for 418 yards and two TDs).
Los Angeles scores 23.3 points per game (16th) and averages 375.0 total yards (5th), including 269.2 passing yards (3rd) and 105.8 rushing yards (23rd). The Rams' defense surrenders 18.3 points (3rd) and 306.8 total yards (8th) per game, including 199.0 passing yards (9th) and 107.8 rushing yards (15th).
Los Angeles Rams Football Injury Report:Β WR Puka Nacua and RT Rob Havenstein are out for Sundayβs game against the Jaguars.
Jacksonville must play cleaner football
Jacksonville (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS, and 3-3 O/U) fell 20-12 to Seattle last week.
The Jags' three-game winning streak was snapped by the Seahawks, who outgained the home team on 14 fewer plays. Seattle was just 1-for-12 on third down, but was still effective enough to secure the win. Jacksonville failed to force a turnover (entered game with an NFL-leading 14 takeaways) and played sloppy football (10 penalties for 76 yards), failing to build off its momentous Monday night victory over Kansas City.
βIt's an undisciplined operation at the moment,β Jaguars coach Liam Coen said. βWhat's standing in our way? Right now, it's us.β
QB Trevor Lawrence has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 1,324 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He averages 6.3 yards per pass and 220.7 yards per game. The Clemson product's top receiving target is WR Brian Thomas Jr. (24 receptions for 334 yards and one TD), and RB Travis Etienne Jr. (89 carries for 470 yards and two TDs) leads the Jags' run game.
Jacksonville scores 23.3 points per game (17th) and averages 331.0 total yards (18th), including 207.0 passing yards (17th) and 124.0 rushing yards (11th). The Jaguars' defense allows 20.0 points (8th) and 347.8 total yards (23rd) per game, including 256.3 passing yards (29th) and 91.5 rushing yards (8th).
Jacksonville Jaguars Football Injury Report:Β LB Devin Lloyd is out. WR Dyami Brown and S Eric Murray are questionable to play against the Rams.
Rams vs. Jaguars Pick
Spread Pick for Rams vs. Jaguars
- Los Angeles -3 (5 Units)
The Rams will overcome the injury to Nacua by spreading the football around, with Adams, Tutu Atwell, and Tyler Higbee most likely to benefit. Jordan Whittington should also be in the mix against a Jaguars secondary that surrenders over 250 passing yards per game. I'm not buying the Jaguars' run defense as an elite stop unit, either. They haven't faced the stiffest competition at that position, ranking 16th in schedule-adjusted run defense. The Rams rank 1st in the league in run block grade, per PFF, while Jacksonville is 27th in run stop win rate. Even after holding Seattle 1-for-12 on third down last week, Jacksonville enters this matchup ranked 22nd in third-down defense, as well.
While both teams have earned impressive wins so far, last week's results differentiate these squads, in my opinion. Los Angeles overcame an unexpected injury to the league's most productive receiver to win by two scores, while Jacksonville shot itself in the foot repeatedly with costly penalties. Seattle also dominated the Jaguars on both lines of scrimmage, especially on defense, as they averaged just 4.4 yards per pass and 3.1 yards per carry. The Rams should have a similar impact on the Jacksonville offense, as they rank in the top ten in the NFL in third-down defense, red zone defense, and sacks.
Over/Under Pick for Rams vs. Jaguars
- Under 44.5 (5 Units)
I have concerns about both offenses heading into this matchup. While I'm confident the Rams will play well enough to win and cover the spread, Nacua is a difference-maker (leads the NFL in targets and PFF receiving grade). Without him, LA is much easier to game plan for. The Rams weren't dominant offensively last week without him, and a low-scoring, defensive game is right up their alley (14-9 win in Week 1 and 17-3 victory in Week 6). Given Jacksonville's inability to play clean football (second-most penalties per game) and its lackluster offensive showing a week ago, I don't see the Rams and Jaguars getting into a shootout on Sunday in London.
