New York Hoping for Improvement in 2025

New York had a dismal campaign in 2024 as the team stumbled to a 3-14 mark to finish in the cellar of the NFC East. The Giants closed the book on the Daniel Jones era as he is now in Indianapolis. Veteran Russell Wilson is the starting quarterback for now, though the team did select Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick in the draft as the quarterback of the future. New York added some nice pieces in the draft as Abdul Carter should help the pass rush, while Dart and Cam Skattebo bolster the offensive skill positions. The Giants have a tough schedule to deal with this season for a last-place team and one has to think that Brian Daboll’s seat is warm at this point.

Last season, the Giants averaged 189.9 yards per game through the air, leaving them 28th in the league in that department. New York ran for an average of 104.9 yards per contest, leaving them 23rd in the league in that category. The Giants were 31st in the league in scoring offense as they put up an average of 16.1 points per game last season. New York was 21st in the league in scoring defense by giving up an average of 24.4 points a contest. Russell Wilson completed 214 of 336 passes for 2.482 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions while getting sacked 33 times last season for Pittsburgh. He added 43 carries for 155 yards plus two scores on the ground. Devin Singletary started the season as the feature back on the ground with 113 carries for 437 yards and four scores last season. Tyrone Tracy Jr. (192 carries, 839 yards, five TD) has taken on a bigger role in recent weeks. Malik Nabers led the team with 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven scores last season as a rookie. Wan’Dale Robinson (93 catches, 699 yards, three TD), Darius Slayton (39 grabs, 571 yards, two TD), Theo Johnson (29 catches, 331 yards, TD) and Tracy Jr. (38 receptions, 284 yards, TD) are other viable targets for the Giants this season. Graham Gano hit all 15 extra point attempts and was nine of 11 on field goal attempts this season, with a long of 53 last season.

Tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) was the lone player on the injury report for the Giants. He was limited on Wednesday and didn’t practice on Thursday.

Commanders Looking to Build Off 2024’s Success

Washington surprised the league in 2024, winning their most games since the 1991 team went 14-2 en route to the Super Bowl that season. Last year’s team went 12-5 and won a pair of playoff games before getting whipped in the NFC title game. Jayden Daniels won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award for his efforts and the hope is that adding another weapon at receiver may help him take the next step this season. The team signed Terry McLaurin to a new deal in training camp and then traded for Deebo Samuel. If the Commanders can generate a pass rush in crunch time this season, they could be a force again this season.

The Commanders finished last season 17th in the league in passing offense with 215.6 yards per game, while they were 3rd in rushing by averaging 154.1 yards per contest on the ground. Washington was 5th in the league in scoring offense by putting up 28.5 points per game, while they were 18th in the league in scoring defense by allowing an average of 23 points per game. Jayden Daniels hit 331 of 480 passes for 3,568 yards with 25 touchdowns against nine interceptions while getting sacked 47 times. He led the team in rushing with 148 carries for 891 yards and six touchdowns.. Austin Ekeler (77 carries, 367 yards, four TD), rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Jeremy McNichols (55 carries, 261 yards, four TD) provide a solid three-headed rushing attack in the backfield. Terry McLaurin led the team with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 scores in the passing game. Zach Ertz (66 catches, 654 yards, seven TD), Noah Brown (35 grabs, 453 yards, TD), Ekeler (35 receptions, 366 yards), Deebo Samuel (51 catches, 670 yards, three TD for San Francisco last season) and Dyami Brown (30 grabs, 308 yards, TD) are going to be valuable targets this season. Matt Gay, who hit all 33 extra point attempts and 31 of 37 field goal attempts for Indianapolis with a long of 56 last season, takes over the kicking duties.

Defensive end Dorance Armstrong (knee), cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring) and wide receiver Noah Brown (knee) were all limited both Wednesday and Thursday in practice.

Spread Pick for Giants vs. Commanders

  • Commanders -6 (5 units)

The Giants were a miserable team last season and they didn’t make enough moves to really be a threat in the NFC East. They’ll be relying on a lot of young pieces to step up and be contributors but it will take some time to get up to speed at this level. Washington improved at skill positions in the offseason and Daniels now has a year under his belt at this stage of his career. The Commanders added Samuel, giving him another weapon to take pressure off McLaurin and Ertz. Washington is at home and they have a major advantage in the talent department. Take Washington as they win this one by double figures.

Over/Under Pick for Giants vs. Commanders

  • Under 45.5 (4 units)

New York was second-worst in the league in scoring offense last season. The Giants were held under 20 points in 11 of their 17 games in 2024. New York saw the under hit in 11 of their 17 games last season, including staying under the mark in five of their eight road games. Washington went over the mark in 11 of their 17 regular season games last season in the regular season and two of their three postseason contests. They went over the mark in six of their nine home contests. We’ve seen the under go 4-2-1 in the last seven meetings between the teams and with the Giants trying to find pieces offensively, look for this one to wind up short of the number.
