New York is still searching for its identity

New York (0-7 SU, 3-4 ATS, and 4-3 O/U) lost 13-6 as one-point underdogs to Carolina last weekend. The Jets have lost five of their seven games by seven or fewer points.

First-year head coach Aaron Glenn is still searching for his first victory, as the Jets have matched the 1996 and 2020 squads as the only in franchise history to start a season 0-7. Carolina held New York to 220 total yards and 3.7 yards per play, controlling the time of possession by over ten minutes. QB Justin Fields was benched in the third quarter of last Sunday's loss, with veteran Tyrod Taylor expected to take over as QB1. The 36-year-old moved the football more effectively than Fields, but he also tossed two interceptions. It's currently unclear who will start for New York against Cincinnati, as Glenn cited “competitive advantage” as his reasoning for not announcing his choice. Taylor is also on the injury report with a knee injury.

“We'll make the right decision,” Glenn said. “Whatever the decision is, I'm going to go with it and we're going to move forward.”

The Ohio State product Fields has been inconsistent, passing for 283 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas one week and just 45 yards the following week against Denver. He has passed for less than 50 yards in three games this season. Taylor has seen action in three games, completing 62.3 percent of his passes for 379 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. The Jets' top receiving target is WR Garrett Wilson (36 receptions for 395 yards and four TDs), and RB Breece Hall (99 carries for 448 yards) paces the ground game.

NY scores 18.4 points per game (27th) and averages 271.3 total yards (29th), including 143.4 passing yards (32nd) and 127.9 rushing yards (9th). The Jets' defense allows 26.1 points (26th) and 326.4 total yards (16th), including 197.1 passing yards (9th) and 129.3 rushing yards (3rd).

New York Jets Football Injury Report: WR Garrett Wilson (knee) and CB Sauce Gardner (concussion) are out. QB Tyrod Taylor (knee), RB Breece Hall (knee), and TE Mason Taylor (quad) are questionable to play against the Bengals

Can Joe Flacco continue to inspire the Bengals?

Cincinnati (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS, and 4-2-1 O/U) beat Pittsburgh 33-31 as 5.5-point underdogs last week, overcoming a four-game losing streak.

The Bengals outlasted the Steelers last Sunday, as QB Joe Flacco rallied the visitors to a division win with 342 passing yards and three touchdowns. It was the Delaware product's second start with Cincinnati after being acquired on Oct. 7 from Cleveland. The home team outgained Pittsburgh 470-396, running 18 more plays and controlling the time of possession by nearly ten minutes. The Steelers averaged more yards per play, but committed two turnovers and had seven penalties.

“Our fans are happy, and I’m happy," Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s a big victory. We needed this. It had been a long time since we won."

The veteran Flacco has firm control of QB1 duties, as Jake Browning was benched for inefficient play after filling in for injured starter Joe Burrow. The 40-year-old's top receiving targets are WRs Ja'Marr Chase (58 receptions for 629 yards and five TDs) and Tee Higgins (24 receptions for 316 yards and three TDs). The Bengals' run game is paced by third-year pro Chase Brown (85 carries for 310 yards and one TD).

Cincinnati scores 19.4 points per game (26th) and averages 268.7 total yards (31st), including 199.9 passing yards (21st) and 68.9 rushing yards (32nd). The Bengals' defense surrenders 30.6 points (31st) and 394.4 total yards (31st), including 257.1 passing yards (30th) and 137.3 rushing yards (27th).

Cincinnati Bengals Football Injury Report: DE Trey Hendrickson (hip) is questionable to play on Sunday against the Jets.

Spread Pick for Jets vs. Bengals

  • New York +6.5 (4 Units)

I lean towards the Jets' side in Sunday's matchup with the Bengals. It's currently unclear who will start at quarterback, and the losses of Wilson and Gardner are challenging to overcome, but New York has played outstanding defense over the past few weeks. The Jets held Denver and Carolina to just 13 points each, with an average of 274 total yards per game, and have been especially stout against the run. I'm also not sold that the Bengals are worth a touchdown based on one good Flacco performance against a weak Steelers defense. Pittsburgh's secondary has allowed 258.8 passing yards per game and made the inconsistent Jets offense look great, giving up 32 points.

Over/Under Pick for Jets vs. Bengals

  • Under 44.5 (5 Units)

There's no reason to believe this game will be a shootout. New York is scoring just 18 points per game, and that number is inflated by its season-opening performance against Pittsburgh. The Jets will be without their star receiver, and their leading rusher is questionable to play. They also have a quarterback conundrum, as neither Fields nor Taylor has shown much promise moving the football down the field. Cincinnati looked like a more talented team than it was last week against the Steelers, but I won't overreact to that performance. New York is tough to run the football against, and could get a boost with LB Quincy Williams' return to the lineup.
