Aaron Rodgers' revenge game in Week 1

The Steelers will have another new quarterback leading the huddle this season. Aaron Rodgers comes over from the Jets to replace Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, who led the team to the playoffs last year.

The Steelers finished lsat season with a 10-8 record as they reached the wild card round of the playoffs. The Ravens defeated Pittsburgh 28-14 to end their season. It was a promising start for Pittsburgh as they won eight of their first 10 games. They did lost five straight to end their year.

This season , expectations remain the same for the Mike Tomlin-led group. Contending for the division and reaching the playoffs is always on the mind for the Steelers. With these expectations, Rogers walks in hopefully to have a comeback season after two dreadful years with the Jets.

New offensive weapons will be needed for Rogers. Wide receiver DK Metcalf comes to Pittsburgh after seven years in Seattle. He has never finished with less than 900 yards receiving in his career.

Former wide receiver George Pickens, who was asked to be WR No. 1, was moved to Dallas in the offseason. Starting running back Najee Harris left the team in free agency has joined the Chargers. Rookie running back Kaleb Johnson, along with Jaylen Warren, will be two players toting the rock for the team.

The defense continues to be the star for the Steelers ,headlined by T.J. Watt. He led the team with 11.5 sacks and finished with six forced fumbles, which led the NFL. Many of the same players return for the Steelers on defense, but consistency will be needed after Pittsburgh’s poor end the season was due to allowing far too many points to be scored on them.

“He’s stronger than most mobile quarterbacks," Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said of Jets quarterback Justin Fields. "That's a component of his game that I think is unique. He's a really talented guy physically. He's not easy to bring down. He's got a real solid base about him. He's big. And so, when I think about what might be different, I think about his unique physical skill set. But in terms of schematics, I don't know the things that they do are going to be uniquely different from others. I think there are some global things that people do in that area.”

Last season, the Steelers were 11-7 against the spread. They were 5-3 against the spread as favorites. The under was 10-8 during last season’s campaign, too.

As of Thursday, the Steelers' defensive tackles, Derrick Harmon and Cameron Heyward did not participate. Harmon was for a knee injury while Heyward is expected to play as he was on rest. Linebacker Nick Herbig was limited with a hamstring injury.

New coach, quarterback look for Jets in 2025

New York comes into the new season with something to prove. It was not a good season for the Jets in 2024. They finished with a 5-12 record, which included four losses by more than one possession. The Jets have a new head coach and a new quarterback to help bring the franchise back to glory.

Aaron Glenn was named the new head coach in January. The former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator was one of the top assistants in the NFL for many years. He’s was with the Lions since 2021, helping turn around Detroit into a contender. The Jets have missed the playoffs in 14 straight seasons which is the longest active streak in the sport.

The big change for the Jets comes at the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers has departed and joined the Steelers, who they are facing here in Week 1. It was a tumultuous two years with the Jets for Rodgers, who was sidelined for the entirety of his first year with an Achilles injury. Last season, things didn’t pan out much better for Rodgers.

With Rodgers out of the door, the Jets have brought in Justin Fields to lead the locker room. Fields played in 10 games for the Steelers last season. He threw for 1,106 yards and had five touchdowns and an interception as he was the main backup to Russell Wilson. Before his one-year stint with Pittsburgh, Fields was supposed to be the franchise quarterback for the Bears. After three years, the Bears decided to move on and look towards a different quarterback.

The main offensive threat for Fields is wide receiver Garrett Wilson. He’s one of the top young wideouts in the sport. Running back Breece Hall provides a key to the offense in the rushing attack. The Jets' offensive line is one of the youngest in the league with two top-11 picks from the past two years marked as starters.

On defense, the Jets will rely on this side of the ball to keep the game low-scoring and ugly. They are led by defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. He’s a Pro Bowler for the past three years. Will McDonald had a big year in 2024 as he secured 10.5 sacks. In the secondary, Sauce Gardner is needed to have another big season like he did in his opening two years.

“I want to be a team where the fans will look up and say ‘We’re proud of that team.’ If they say that, I’ll be happy,” Glenn said. “I’ll be happy, because within that, I know that wins will come.”

Last season, the Jets were 6-11 against the spread. Yes, this year’s team is very new, but many key players are returning who made an impact in those games. The over was 10-6-1 last year, too.

As of Thursday night, the Jets shared that offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker did not participate in practice. Offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor was limited in Thursday’s practice, too.

Spread Pick for New York Jets vs Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Pittsburgh Steelers -2.5 (5 units)

The Steelers will come into this game with swagger. Their starting quarterback will look for revenge of his old team in the Jets. The Steelers have always found ways to win close games, especially with head coach Mike Tomlin leading the way. Last season, the Steelers were 5-3 against the spread as favorites. They may not have the most dynamic offense, especially if Rogers cannot throw the ball deep this season, but they do return one of the top defenses led by T.J. Watt. Pittsburgh’s defense will be able to shut down a revamped Jets offense with new quarterback Justin Fields and a new head coach. There are too many new things happening with the Jets for them to contend against a Steelers team that is the epitome of consistency over the course of the past decade. In a super low scoring game, I’m taking the Steelers thanks to defensive turnovers and strong special teams play.

Take the Steelers to cover.

Over/Under Pick for New York Jets vs Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Under 38.5  (5 units)

Last season, the offense for both teams struggled. The defenses led the charge and were the main catalysts in helping each squad earn wins. The most consistent things for both teams entering the new season is their defenses. Now with both teams swapping quarterbacks, the offenses will not be explosive as the two teams will be just feeling each other out while still learning how to play with each other. Defense reigns supreme in this one.

Take the under on Sunday.
