Key Matchups for Chargers vs. Raiders

Raiders make changes

It's too late but the Raiders fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly after the Raiders put up 10 points against a very good Cleveland defense on Sunday. But it doesn't matter if it was Cleveland or Dallas (16pts) or Denver (7pts). They've had some hideous, offensive performances. It starts with veteran QB Geno Smith, who has 2,367 yards passing with 13 TDs and 13 INTs. He's also been sacked 41 times.

But the real problem is the offensive line, which has created very few holes for rookie RB Ashton Jeanty, who has 604 yards and four TDs, while averaging just 3.6 yards per carry. TE Brock Bowers, who has missed three games due to a knee injury, still has the most catches on teh team with 45 for 510 yards and three TDs.

The Raiders allow just 321.6 yards per game and 103.4 rushing yards (12th). Star DE Maxx Crosby leads the team with six sacks. The offense averages just 268.9 yards per game, 79.5 rushing yards per game, and 15 points per game.

Chargers struggle before the bye

The Chargers have an issue. They're in the AFC West, where Denver is running away with the division at 9-2. The Chargers are 7-4, two games behind and up on the always-dangerous Chiefs (6-6). Jacksonville is already 7-4 and beat the Chargers two weeks ago, 35-6. Los Angeles amassed just eight first downs and 135 total yards in an awful offensive display.

Like the Raiders, the Chargers' main issue is up front, where top OT Joe Alt (ankle) is out for the season. QB Justin Herbert is completing 66.5% of his passes for 2,691 yards with 19 TDs and nine picks. He's been sacked 35 times and has rushed for 345 yards. Veteran receiver Keenan Allen leads with 56 catches for 592 yards, while Ladd McConkey adds 54 catches for 644 yards.

Defensively, they are allowing 286.1 yards per game (5th), 172.3 passing yards per game (4th) and 113.8 rushing yards (16th). On offense, they are averaging 115.7 yards per game on the ground and 231.5 passing yards (11th).

Raiders:

  • 3-7 ATS last 10 games
  • 1-4 ATS last 5 vs. Chargers.

Chargers:

  • 2-6 ATS last 8 games.
  • 5-2 Under last 7 vs. Raiders.

Key Injuries and Analysis for Chargers vs. Raiders

Raiders:

  • TE Michael Mayer (ankle) is out. Backup to Bowers. Strong blocker.
  • OL Jordan Meredith (ankle) is out.
  • DT Adam Butler (illness) is questionable.
  • CB Danny Holmes (illness) is questionable.

Charges:

Raiders vs. Chargers Final Score Prediction

  • LA Chargers 24-Las Vegas 13

The Chargers won the first 20-9 and picked off Geno Smith three times on Sept. 15. That was a harbinger of things to come for the Raiders, who still can't protect or open up holes up front. It doesn't matter if it's Chip Kelly, Tom Brady or their new OC Greg Olson, a former Raiders OC. You just can't make things up for this franchise. Now, Jim Harbaugh has an extra week to prepare and try and improve his left tackle position while healing up injuries. Either way, his defense has not been the problem and should once again dictate this game and force another low-scoring rock fight.
