Seahawks vs. 49ers prediction

Tonight's San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Chargers picks center on a market that has completely reversed direction since opening. San Francisco visits SoFi Stadium for a 10:00 p.m. ET preseason kickoff after losing 19-13 to Tennessee, while Los Angeles enters 1-0 after a 27-7 win at Houston. The Chargers opened as a 1.5-point favorite, but the current market has San Francisco laying 1.5. The total has also dropped from 39.5 to 38.5. Both teams plan to expose portions of their starting units, but the short starter workloads make the reserve quarterback and offensive-line matchups more important over four quarters.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Chargers Preview

The most important confirmed personnel note belongs to Los Angeles. Justin Herbert will start, and the Chargers have said their starters are expected to play one series before the backups take over. That gives the first possession some regular-season flavor, especially because Herbert is working in a new offensive structure and the coaching staff wants the operation to feel normal before Week 1. It does not, however, justify evaluating this game as if Herbert will control the result. His work should be brief by design.

San Francisco is approaching the night similarly. Kyle Shanahan has indicated that a number of starters will play, with Brock Purdy having a good chance to be part of that group. The 49ers are unlikely to resemble their full regular-season offense even if Purdy takes a couple of series. Christian McCaffrey has been dealing with tightness, George Kittle has an Achilles issue, and other established players have had their workloads managed. That means the early possessions may offer useful rehearsal reps without featuring the complete collection of San Francisco's top skill players.

The 49ers also have a stronger reserve quarterback floor than many preseason teams because Mac Jones gives them legitimate NFL starting experience after Purdy exits. That is a major reason San Francisco can remain functional when the game changes from starter evaluation to roster evaluation. Adrian Martinez and the rest of the depth chart still matter later, but Jones gives the 49ers a bridge through the middle portion of the game that can help them avoid the offensive collapse that often follows a starting quarterback cameo.

Los Angeles has already demonstrated that its depth can produce. The Chargers scored 27 points in Houston and controlled the opener from the start. Their reserve group benefits from having already played a full game in the system, and the staff now has a clearer idea of which combinations work. That is one reason I am reluctant to chase San Francisco after the market flipped from Chargers -1.5 to 49ers -1.5. The move is meaningful, but it has already removed the original value on the road team.

The total move is more useful. The market opened at 39.5 and has settled at 38.5 even with both starting quarterbacks expected to see at least some action. That tells us the market is correctly separating the first few drives from the full 60-minute environment. One series of Herbert and a brief Purdy appearance can create scoring opportunities, but the majority of the game will still be played by backups with coaches prioritizing evaluation over tempo.

Matchup Breakdown

San Francisco's offensive line is the most important injury-sensitive unit in the matchup. Guard Dominick Puni has been dealing with a concussion, and the 49ers have other depth concerns across the front. Los Angeles generated pressure in the joint practice and can create problems even without leaving its starting defense on the field for long. If San Francisco has to reshuffle the interior line, the cleanest way to protect the quarterbacks is to lean on the run game and shorter throws.

The Chargers have their own health questions, including tackle Rashawn Slater and receiver Quentin Johnston. Because this is preseason, the coaching staff has little incentive to force a questionable veteran into extended action. That reduces the likelihood that the early Los Angeles offense resembles the group Herbert will actually command in September. Once the first unit leaves, the focus shifts toward backup execution and ball security.

The joint practice also matters because both coaching staffs already got competitive first-team work against the opponent. That can reduce the need for extended starter snaps in the game itself. Preseason teams often use the exhibition after a joint practice to test specific players and situations rather than to simulate four quarters of normal offense. With the total still near 39, the Under has room even if each starting quarterback produces one successful scoring possession.

Game Thesis: The spread has already moved aggressively toward San Francisco, but the total still offers a cleaner way to play the matchup. Both starting quarterbacks should see limited work, several important offensive pieces are being managed, and the joint practice reduced the need for long first-team auditions. The game should become more conservative and evaluation-driven as it progresses.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Chargers Best Bet - Total: Under 38.5 (-110)

Under 38.5 is the preferred wager because the number still assumes enough scoring from two offenses that will spend most of the night without their top quarterbacks. Herbert is scheduled for one series. Purdy may get a little more, but San Francisco has no reason to expose him or its injured skill-position veterans for long. The most likely game state is a competitive first quarter followed by a much more uneven middle and late portion.

The risk is that the experienced backup quarterbacks create efficient second-half offense. San Francisco has Jones, while Los Angeles showed in Week 1 that its reserves can finish drives. Short fields from turnovers would also be dangerous. Even with those risks, the threshold is attractive at 38.5. I would still consider Under 38, but the value becomes noticeably thinner if the market falls to 37 or below.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Chargers Spread Pick: San Francisco -1.5 (-108)

San Francisco is a secondary lean rather than the primary bet. The 49ers have the more stable veteran bridge behind the starter, and the market flip suggests the expected playing-time picture favors them slightly. Laying more than a field goal would be a different proposition, but -1.5 asks San Francisco to win a close game rather than dominate it.

Prediction: San Francisco 49ers 20, Los Angeles Chargers 17
