Commanders Trying to Find Momentum

Washington has alternated wins and losses in their first six games this season, as they were beaten by the Bears at home Monday night. The Commanders fell to 3-3 on the year and stand second in the NFC East, one game behind the Eagles for the top spot in the division. Against Chicago, Washington trailed 6-0 after the opening quarter and 13-0 in the opening minute of the second quarter. The Commanders rallied to lead 24-16 with 11:27 remaining, but gave up the final nine points, including the game-winning field goal with no time left. Washington was outgained 381-329 in total offense despite owning a 22-19 advantage in first downs and a 31:34 to 28:26 edge in time of possession. The Commanders were hurt in the turnover department, committing three giveaways that led to 13 Chicago points, while failing to force a takeaway.

The Commanders entered week 7 25th in the league in passing offense with 194.7 yards per game, while they are tied for 2nd in rushing by averaging 151 yards per contest on the ground. Washington is 7th in the league in scoring offense by putting up 26.3 points per game, while they are 13th in the league in scoring defense by allowing an average of 21 points per game. Jayden Daniels has hit 77 of 124 passes for 875 yards with seven touchdowns against one interception while getting sacked 11 times. Dallas saw their defense flounder once again as they were beaten on the road by Carolina in their previous game last Sunday. The Cowboys dropped to 2-3-1 on the year and stand third in the NFC East, 1.5 games behind the Eagles for the top spot. Against Carolina, Dallas led 17-13 at the half and 24-20 after three quarters before tying the game at 27 with 9:20 to play. The Cowboys gave up a 15-play, 71-yard drive that chewed up the final 6:07, culminating in a game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired to wind up with the loss. Dallas was outgained 410-292 in total offense, gave up 27 first downs while picking up 15 and lost time of possession by a 32:02 to 27:58 margin. Those numbers overshadowed that they forced the lone turnover in the game.

This season, the Cowboys are 2nd in the league in passing offense with 270.3 yards per contest. Dallas is 15th in rushing offense with 117.2 yards per game this season. The Cowboys are 3rd in scoring offense as they average 29.7 points a night. Dallas stands 31st in the league in scoring defense as they give up an average of 30.7 points a contest. Dak Prescott has hit 164 of 229 passes for 1,617 yards with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions on the year. He has been sacked seven times for 36 yards in losses while adding 49 yards plus a score on the ground. Joe Milton III is three of five passing for 41 yards and an interception. Javonte Williams (92 carries, 476 yards, five TD), Miles Sanders (20 carries, 117 yards, TD), Ryan Flournoy (four carries, 25 yards) and KaVontae Turpin (six carries, 23 yards) have all seen some work in the ground game as well. Tight end Jake Ferguson leads the team with 44 receptions for 305 yards and four scores. George Pickens (32 catches, 525 yards, six TD), CeeDee Lamb (16 grabs, 222 yards), Flournoy (13 receptions, 179 yards), Turpin (11 catches, 159 yards, TD) and Jalen Tolbert (11 grabs, 109 yards) are other players with more than 100 receiving yards this season. Brandon Aubrey is 18 of 19 on extra point attempts and 12 of 12 on field goal attempts with a long of 60 this season.

Guard Trevor Keegan (neck) was limited in practice on Wednesday and did not practice on Thursday. Safety Donovan Wilson (elbow/knee), offensive linemen Tyler Smith (knee), Tyler Booker (ankle) plus Ajani Cornelius (knee), wide receivers Turpin (foot), Jonathan Mingo (knee) and Lamb (ankle), along with defensive end Marshall Kneeland (ankle) were limited both days. So much of this is wrapped up in the injury situation for the Commanders. We don’t know the situation for McLaurin and Samuel, while Noah Brown was placed on injured reserve this week. The Commanders did sign Treylon Burks to the practice squad, which raises concerns about the depth at the position. Meanwhile, Dallas is expected to get Lamb back after missing three games with an ankle injury, adding another weapon to the passing attack. Washington will have to do damage with the ground game, but the fact that the Commanders lack most of their weapons in the pass game could make them more one-dimensional than normal. Playing at home, you have to give the advantage to the Cowboys here.

They have stayed under the number in two of their three road games in relation to the total on the road this season, with the lone exceptionbeing  their loss to the Falcons back on September 28. Dallas has seen the over post a 4-2 mark in their six games and come in having gone over the number in three straight contests. The Cowboys blew past the total in both their home games this season, combining for 77 points in an overtime win over the Giants and 80 points in a tie against the Packers. With the Cowboys leaky defensively and three of the last four meetings between the teams going over the total, look for this one to wind up over the mark as well.
