Washington Commanders vs Dallas Cowboys Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Sunday September 20 2026

By: Al MacMillan Published 09/19/2026, 10:46 AM ET

Sunday's Washington Commanders vs Dallas Cowboys picks feature two 0-1 NFC East teams trying to avoid an early divisional hole. Dallas is favored by 4.5 after opening closer to -3.5, and the total is 50.5 at AT&T Stadium. Washington lost 24-22 to Philadelphia, while Dallas was beaten 28-20 by the Giants.

Dak Prescott gives Dallas a home-field quarterback edge, but Jayden Daniels and Washington showed enough against Philadelphia to make more than a field goal attractive. The divisional familiarity also reduces the value of assuming Dallas will create easy separation simply because it is at home.

Washington Commanders vs Dallas Cowboys Preview

Washington stayed within one possession of Philadelphia and now faces a Dallas defense that struggled to contain Jaxson Dart and the Giants' physical offense. Daniels gives the Commanders a different problem because his mobility forces the defense to account for quarterback runs as well as extended passing plays.

Dallas has to improve on first down. The Giants rushed for 165 yards in Week 1 and controlled the ball for more than 36 minutes. If Washington can create a similar possession advantage, the Cowboys will have fewer opportunities to turn Prescott's passing ability into a margin larger than four points.

The Commanders' injury report is a concern on defense. Linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo did not practice Wednesday, while several edge and defensive-line players were limited. Those front-seven injuries matter because Dallas can attack them with the run game and play action rather than forcing Prescott into a high-volume passing plan.

Dallas has defensive questions of its own, including safety Malik Hooker and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown on the early injury report. Washington can exploit any communication issues by moving Daniels and changing launch points, especially if the Cowboys try to disguise coverage with two-high shells.

The spread has moved from Dallas -3.5 to -4.5, crossing four but staying below the key number of seven. Washington bettors now receive an extra point compared with the opener. The total has eased to 50.5, which remains high for a divisional game where both teams have incentives to protect their defenses with longer possessions.

Washington can also use tempo selectively rather than playing fast for four quarters. Daniels is dangerous when the defense cannot substitute, and a few no-huddle sequences can keep Dallas in a personnel package the Commanders like. The goal is to create leverage, not simply increase possession count, because a slower overall game favors the underdog spread.

Matchup Breakdown

Washington's best offensive matchup is Daniels against Dallas' edge discipline. If the Cowboys rush too far upfield, Daniels can escape and turn third-and-long into manageable situations. Dallas needs to compress the pocket rather than simply chase sacks.

The Cowboys should attack Washington's injured front with the run game and quick throws. Prescott is most dangerous when the offense stays on schedule and he can use play action instead of dropping back against obvious pressure. A balanced plan also keeps Washington's offense on the sideline.

AT&T Stadium removes weather from the handicap. The total therefore comes down to whether these teams finish drives. Both offenses have playmakers, but divisional games often produce more red-zone possessions that end in field goals because the defenses know the route concepts and protection tendencies.

The current spread gives Washington enough room to lose a close game. Dallas can be the better team and still win by three, which is exactly the type of outcome a divisional matchup between two teams trying to avoid 0-2 can produce.

Both teams should also be aware of the cost of an 0-2 start inside the NFC East. That can encourage aggressive fourth-down decisions near midfield, but it can also create more conservative late-game play if the score is within one possession. The spread gives Washington room to benefit from either type of close-game script.

Dallas should have success if Prescott can force Washington's injured front to defend horizontally. Screens and perimeter runs can make edge defenders tackle in space, then the Cowboys can come back inside once the defense widens. That is a better approach than asking Prescott to win a pure dropback game against a pass rush that is still talented despite the injury list.

Washington's offensive line also has to keep Daniels from absorbing unnecessary hits in a second straight divisional game. His legs are a weapon, but designed runs and scrambles should be used selectively rather than as the only answer to pressure. If the Commanders can keep him healthy and efficient through three quarters, the +4.5 becomes difficult for Dallas to separate from late.

The Cowboys also have to prove that Week 1's defensive problems were correctable rather than structural. New York repeatedly stayed ahead of the chains and made Dallas defend long possessions. Washington can create a similar challenge with Daniels, and every extended Commanders drive makes it harder for Dallas to justify a spread that has moved above four points.

Game Thesis: Dallas should respond better at home and has the more stable overall offensive structure, but Washington's quarterback mobility and divisional familiarity make a comfortable Cowboys win difficult to price. The Commanders can stay within one score, while a more methodical game keeps the total below the 50s.

Commanders vs Cowboys Best Bet - Spread: Washington +4.5 (-115)

Washington +4.5 is the best bet because the number has moved away from the opener without crossing a major injury threshold at quarterback. Daniels gives the Commanders enough playmaking ability to remain dangerous even when a play breaks down, and Dallas has not yet shown that its defense can consistently get off the field.

The biggest risk is Washington's defensive health. If the front cannot stop the run, Dallas can control possession and create a two-score lead without asking Prescott to force the ball. The spread is strongest above +4 and would improve further at +5.

Commanders vs Cowboys Total Pick: Under 50.5 (-110)

Under 50.5 is the secondary play because the number still requires both teams to produce sustained touchdown efficiency. Washington can shorten the game with Daniels' legs and Dallas can do the same by leaning on the run against an injured front.

A 26-23 Dallas win keeps the total below 50.5 and matches the expectation of a one-score divisional finish.

Prediction: Dallas Cowboys 26, Washington Commanders 23
