Commanders Looking to Play Better in Week 2
Washington picked up the win in their opener as they took down the Giants at home in an NFC East matchup but their performance left plenty to be desired. The Commanders have to play better football if they look to earn a road win over a tough conference foe. Against New York, Washington was stingy defensively but they bogged down on drives too often to beat a good team. The Commanders took a 7-0 lead midway through the opening quarter and never let the Giants get even the rest of the way. Washington rolled up a 432-231 edge in total offense and owned a 25-17 advantage in first downs in a game where neither team turned the ball over. Those numbers more than made up for a 30:32 to 29:28 disadvantage in time of possession in the contest.
Jayden Daniels completed 19 of 30 pass attempts for 233 yards and a touchdown in the game. He added 11 carries for 68 yards while getting sacked three times. Jacory Croskey-Merritt led the ground game with 10 carries for 82 yards and a score. Austin Ekeler (six carries, 26 yards), Jeremy McNichols (four carries, 25 yards) and Deebo Samuel (one carry, 19 yards, TD) were also involved in the ground game. Samuel reeled in seven passes for 77 yards in his team debut to go with a rushing score. Ekeler (three receptions, 31 yards), Zach Ertz (three catches, 26 yards, TD), Noah Brown (two grabs, 27 yards) and Terry McLaurin (two catches, 27 yards) were all involved in the passing game. Matt Gay hit all three extra point attempts and did not attempt a field goal in the contest.
Punter Tress Way (back) was injured Sunday and did not practice Monday. Ekeler (shoulder) and Brown (knee) were both limited in practice Monday, so watch for updates on their status heading toward kickoff.
Green Bay Seeking to Build Off Strong Opener
Green Bay put forth a solid effort on both sides of the ball as they stifled a Detroit squad that won 15 regular season games a season ago. The Packers now look to build off that momentum as they face a second straight playoff team from 2024. Against Detroit, Green Bay drove 83 yards in 12 plays off the opening kickoff to score a touchdown and didn’t look back. The Packers were up 10-0 after the opening quarter, never let the Lions closer than seven the rest of the way and didn’t allow the Lions a touchdown until just 55 seconds remained in the game. Green Bay owned a 266-246 advantage in total offense and forced the game’s lone turnover. They were edged 16-14 in first downs and lost time of possession by a 35:25 to 24:35 margin in the contest.
Jordan Love was efficient at quarterback, hitting 16 of 22 passes for 188 yards and two scores while running the ball three times for four yards. Josh Jacobs led the run game with 19 carries for 66 yards and a score. No other player had more than four yards on the ground for the Packers. Jayden Reed led the team in the passing game with three catches for 45 yards and a score. Romeo Doubs (68 yards), Dontayvion Wicks (30 yards), Tucker Kraft (16 yards, TD) and Matthew Golden (16 yards) each had two receptions in the contest. Brandon McManus hit all three extra point attempts and both field goal attempts, connecting from 34 and 38 yards. Micah Parsons had a sack in his Packers debut, one of four sacks by the Green Bay defense.
Green Bay has a lengthy injury report to monitor ahead of kickoff. Defensive lineman Brenton Cox Jr. (groin), guard Aaron Banks (ankle/groin), offensive lineman Zach Tom (oblique), Reed (foot) and cornerback Bo Melton (shoulder) all did not practice Monday. Parsons (back), defensive lineman Barryn Sorrell (knee), Wicks (calf), cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee), Golden (ankle) and safety Zayne Anderson (knee) were each limited Monday. Watch for updates on their statuses heading closer to kickoff.
Commanders vs. Packers Pick
Spread Pick for Commanders vs. Packers
- Packers -3.5 (4 units)
Both teams picked up victories in their season opener, though the level of competition was vastly different. Washington outgained the Giants by nearly a 2 to 1 margin but managed to put just 21 points on the board in the win. Green Bay looked dominant as they took down a Detroit team that had the best record in the NFC last season. The addition of Parsons bolstered the Green Bay pass rush as they sacked Jared Goff four times, recorded nine QB hits and nine tackles for loss. Washington’s offensive line did have some issues keeping the Giants’ pass rush in check. The Packers are at home and as long as their injury issues aren’t too serious, they should take care of business here.
Over/Under Pick for Commanders vs. Packers
- Under 48.5 (4 units)
Both of these teams stayed well under the total in their season openers. The Commanders and Giants combined to total 27 points, falling short of the 45.5-point mark set by the sportsbooks. Last season, Washington went over the mark in five of their eight road contests. Green Bay combined with Detroit to score 40 points to fall short of the 48.5-point total set in the opener by the books. The Packers saw the under post an 8-8-1 mark in the regular season and stayed under the total in their lone postseason tilt. Green Bay saw the under post a 5-3-1 mark in their nine home games last season. With both defenses looking good in the opening week of the season, coupled with a short week, take the under in this contest.
