Ducks Hoping to Pick Up Road Victory

Anaheim had a two-game win streak snapped as they fell at Tampa Bay Saturday night to fall to 2-2 on a five-game road trip that ends here. The Ducks entered Monday 4-3-1 on the season and stand sixth in the Pacific Division, four points behind the Golden Knights for the top spot in the division. Anaheim is 5th in the league in goals per game as they average 3.63 goals per contest. The Ducks are 27th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.63 goals a night. Anaheim is 18th in power play success as they cash in on 20% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Ducks are tied for 22nd in the league in the penalty killing department as they successfully navigate 72.7% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Tampa Bay, Anaheim battled but ended up falling a goal short on the road Saturday night. The Ducks owned a 15-12 advantage in shots in the opening period but trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, the Ducks held a 14-9 advantage in shots but were outscored 2-1 to trail 3-1 at the second intermission. Jacob Trouba tied the score with his second goal of the season at 4:42 off assists from Troy Terry and Mason MacTavish. The Ducks gave up a pair of goals later in the period to trail 3-1. In the third period, Anaheim was outshot 12-11 but outscored the Lightning 2-1, leaving them a goal short as time expired. Ryan Poehling made it a 3-2 game with his first goal of the year at 7:11 off assists from Ross Johnston and Drew Helleson. Only 59 seconds later, Terry knotted the game with his third goal of the year at 8:10 with assists going to Cutter Gauthier and Leo Carlsson. The Ducks gave up the winning goal on the power play with 3:15 remaining in the contest. Lukas Dostal made 29 saves for Anaheim, who held a 40-33 advantage in shots, in the loss. Dostal (2-3-1, 3.02 GAA, .899 save percentage) is the likely starter between the pipes here.

Centers Jansen Hankins (upper body) and Ryan Strome (upper body) are both out indefinitely. Defenseman Radko Gudas (lower body) and left wing Chris Kreider (illness) are both questionable here.

Florida Seeking to Skate Away With Home Win

Florida won for just the second time in seven games as they took down Vegas at home Saturday night in their previous contest. The Panthers entered Monday 5-5-0 on the year and were third in the Atlantic Division, four points behind Montreal for the top spot. Florida is tied for 29th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 2.50 goals a night this season. The Panthers are 13th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.80 goals per contest. Florida is 13th in power play success as they have cashed in on 22.5% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Panthers are 16th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 78.8% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Vegas, Florida turned in a stellar defensive outing as they blanked the league’s highest-scoring team en route to the win. The Panthers found themselves outshot 7-5 in the first period but skated off with a 1-0 advantage after the opening 20 minutes of play. Sam Reinhart opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at 17:19 off assists from Carter Verhaeghe and Evan Rodrigues. In the second period, Florida held a 12-5 shot edge with neither team scoring, keeping the game 1-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Panthers with a 9-5 shot advantage and a 2-0 edge on the scoreboard to seal the win. Cole Schwindt made it a 2-0 game with his first goal of the season at 3:29 off assists from Jonah Gadjovich and A.J. Greer. Greer closed the scoring with his third goal of the year at 10:04 off an assist from Brad Marchand. Sergei Bobrovsky made 17 saves for the Panthers, who owned a 26-17 edge in shots, to earn the shutout win. Bobrovsky (5-3-0, 2.28 GAA, .903 save percentage, shutout) is expected to get the start in goal here.

Two of Florida’s top three point getters from a season ago won’t take the ice here. Aleksander Barkov (20 goals, 71 points) and Matthew Tkachuk (22 goals, 57 points in 52 games) are both injured long term. Barkov (knee) could miss the entire season while Tkachuk (groin) is expected to be out until December. Nosek (knee) is also out an extended period after injuring his knee in the offseason. Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov (upper body) was placed on IR and is out indefinitely.

Ducks vs. Panthers Pick

Ducks vs. Panthers Moneyline Pick

  • Panthers -1.5 (+130)

Florida actually played more the style that we saw in their back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in their triumph over Vegas Saturday. The Panthers clamped down defensively and limited the Golden Knights’ offensive chances as they gave up only 17 shots. Look for Florida to play a similar style against the young Ducks, who have been on fire offensively but are equally dismal on the defensive end of the ice. Anaheim is prone to giving up offensive chances by the truckload and facing a team like Florida that is capable of taking advantage of those situations is a dangerous proposition. Given the experience factor that Florida has, coupled with playing on home ice, take the Panthers in this contest.

Ducks vs. Panthers Over/Under Pick

  • Over 5.5 (-130) (4 units)

Anaheim enters this game having gone over the total in five of their eight games this season, including each of their last three. The Ducks have an average of 7.26 goals per game this season and that number climbs to 7.67 goals per contest in their six road games. Florida has seen the over hit in four of their 10 games on the year. The Panthers have an average total of 5.30 goals per game on the year and that number bumps to 5.40 goals per game in their five home tilts. With the way Anaheim has scored and given up goals in the early going, this game winds up over the number.
