Game Preview

Buffalo arrives in Anaheim at 10 p.m. ET after a 2-0 win over San Jose Tuesday, but the matchup with the Ducks may look nothing like that controlled defensive game. Both clubs have productive young scoring talent and have surrendered more than three goals per game in the early season. Buffalo is 5-4-3, Anaheim 5-6-1. The Sabres are a small road favorite, yet the most appealing angle is a full-game total of 6.5 rather than relying on either team to defend consistently for sixty minutes.

Buffalo Recent Form

Buffalo protected its own zone well in the shutout at San Jose, with the defense taking away second chances and forcing the Sharks into lower-quality efforts. That performance is encouraging but it contrasts with a broader profile in which the Sabres are allowing roughly 3.3 goals a game. Tage Thompson remains a powerful scorer, Jack Quinn has opened with six goals and Owen Power has generated offense from the back end. The young skill can drive a high total when Buffalo finds chances off the rush instead of trying to grind out repeated cycles.

Anaheim Recent Form

Anaheim is allowing roughly 3.6 goals a game, among the league's higher rates, but it has young forwards who can answer quickly. Leo Carlsson has been the team's leading point producer, Beckett Sennecke has finished chances effectively and Jackson LaCombe contributes to the offensive attack from defense. The Ducks lost 6-5 to Vancouver in overtime Tuesday after allowing a four-goal third-period comeback. That collapse is a defensive warning, but scoring five times also demonstrates why Anaheim can help a total reach seven goals rather than depending on Buffalo to do all the work.

Goaltending and Special Teams

Lukas Dostal is the expected Anaheim starter, and Buffalo's crease has included Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Colten Ellis in recent reporting. Confirmed goalie assignments should be checked before publication because an unexpected change could alter the price of this total. Anaheim's penalty kill is around the league's middle tier, while Buffalo's power play has struggled near the bottom. The Ducks have been more productive on the man advantage, and Buffalo's own penalty killing has created opportunities for opposing attacks. Either direction of special-teams play can add a goal.

Odds and Line Movement

Buffalo opened near -132 on one tracked board and has drifted toward -139 to -140, leaving Anaheim around +115 to +122. That movement makes the road favorite more expensive but does not directly answer how many goals the teams will score. The full-game total is commonly 6.5, with Over prices ranging from about -113 to -125 depending on the sportsbook. A a sportsbook comparison displayed Over 6.5 at -125. That is the reference threshold; laying considerably more would reduce the appeal of a high-variance goals market.

How Seven Goals Can Arrive

Buffalo should attempt to attack Anaheim's defensive coverage before the Ducks get set, particularly through Thompson's shot and Quinn's quick finishing. Anaheim can counter through Carlsson and Sennecke against Buffalo's sometimes vulnerable second and third defensive pairs. Both teams have enough transition offense that the game can turn into extended exchanges after the first goal. If either club jumps ahead by two, the other will likely attack with additional risk rather than settle into a low-event structure. A late empty-net situation could also create an additional scoring opportunity.

Second-Period Matchup

The first fifteen minutes will help determine whether this becomes the offensive game expected. Anaheim should be eager to respond after surrendering its lead against Vancouver, and that urgency can create either pressure or mistakes. Buffalo can exploit a hasty Ducks pinch with a quick outlet to Thompson, while Anaheim can test the Sabres' vulnerable penalty kill if the visitors take unnecessary penalties. Because the Over needs seven goals, one explosive period may be enough to put it in position but not to guarantee a win. A 2-2 game after the first period would suit the pick, but the teams must still avoid becoming excessively cautious once the score tightens. The bet is strongest at the posted 6.5 rather than a later 7.

Under Risks

The main risk is that Buffalo repeats its disciplined shutout performance against San Jose or that Dostal produces a much stronger outing than his early statistics suggest. Buffalo's power play has also struggled, so an abundance of penalties would not automatically mean an abundance of goals. A 3-2 game remains possible if both clubs manage the middle of the ice effectively. Still, the recent defensive breakdowns and high-end scoring options on each side create more paths to seven goals than a cautious moneyline handicap would capture.

Best Bet and Score Prediction

Best Bet: Over 6.5 goals (-125 or better). Buffalo's attack can expose Anaheim's defensive weakness, and the Ducks have enough skill to contribute multiple goals against a Sabres team that has been inconsistent at preventing them. This selection is about combined scoring, not a strong position on the winner. Prediction: Buffalo 5, Anaheim 4. It could be an entertaining game in which each side generates repeated dangerous chances and the total clears the threshold before the final horn.
