Buffalo Trying to Rebound From Rough Showing in Opener

Buffalo sputtered in the home opener, turning in a disappointing performance as they were blanked by the Rangers Thursday night. The Sabres enter this game 0-1-0 on the year and stand tied for sixth in the Atlantic Division, four points behind Boston and Florida for the top spot. For the season, Buffalo is tied for 31st in offense as they are averaging zero goals per game on the season. The Sabres are tied for 20th in the league in goals against as they allow four goals per contest this year. Buffalo is tied for 19th in power play success as they cash in 0% of their chances with the man advantage. The Sabres are tied for 1st in the league in penalty killing as they successfully get through 100% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against the Rangers, Buffalo hung around but the fact remained that the inability to dent the twine proved to be their undoing, disappointing the home crowd. The Sabres were outshot 16-11 in the opening period and trailed 1-0 at the first intermission. In the second period, Buffalo held a 14-5 advantage in shots with neither side scoring, leaving the hosts down 1-0 after 40 minutes of play. The third period saw the shots even at 12 but the Sabres were outscored 3-0 to wind up with the loss. Alex Lyon made 29 saves for Buffalo, who held a 37-33 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. He is expected to get the start in goal again for the Sabres here.

Left wing Jordan Greenway (lower body), defenseman Michael Kesselring (undisclosed) and goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) are expected to be out until at least mid-October. Left wing Zach Benson (undisclosed), center Josh Norris (upper body) and defenseman Owen Power (hamstring) are each questionable here.

Bruins Seeking Third Straight Win to Open Season

Boston followed up their season-opening win over Washington as it edged Chicago in overtime at home Thursday night. The Bruins improved to 2-0-0 on the season and are tied for the top spot in the Atlantic Division with Florida. Boston is tied for 10th in the league in scoring as they average 3.50 goals per game on the season. The Bruins are tied for 9th in goals against as they allow two goals per contest. Boston is tied for 8th in power play success as they have cashed in 28.6% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Bruins are tied for 1st in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 100% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Chicago, it took more than 60 minutes, but the Bruins were able to skate away with two points as they prevailed in overtime. The Bruins held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period and skated off tied at one after 20 minutes of play. Casey Mittelstadt opened the scoring with his first goal of the year, unassisted, at the 3:53 mark. They gave up the equalizer later in the period. In the second period, Boston was outshot 8-7 with both teams scoring once, leaving the game even at two at the second intermission. After falling behind 2-1, Tanner Jeannot tied the game with his first of the year at 9:10 with assists going to Michael Eyssimont and Henri Jokiharju. The third period saw Boston with a 13-6 advantage in shots, with both teams scoring once, sending the game to overtime knotted at three. Elias Lindholm gave Boston a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the year, on the power play, at the 15 second mark with assists going to Pavel Zacha and David Pastrnak. They gave up the tying goal just over two minutes later. In overtime, Boston was outshot 3-2 but scored the winning goal to skate off with the win. Fraser Minten tallied his first goal of the year, unassisted, at the 2:12 mark to give Boston the victory. Joonas Korpisalo made 21 saves for the Bruins, who held a 33-24 advantage in shots, in the victory. Jeremy Swayman (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .972 save percentage) is expected to get the start between the pipes here.

Hampus Lindholm (lower body) is questionable here.

Sabres vs. Bruins Pick

Sabres vs. Bruins Moneyline Pick

  • Bruins -110 (4 units)

Buffalo was unable to solve Igor Shesterkin in their opener despite firing 37 shots on goal. Missing two of their potential top four defensemen in Power and Kesselring is an issue and their forward depth is something that Lindy Ruff has to adjust to on the fly. Boston is playing their third game in four nights here, but they are 2-0 on the year. Swayman was sharp in his season debut against Washington and they’re eager to put last year’s disappointment behind them. Seeing how Buffalo sputtered against the Rangers, it’s tough to have a ton of faith in them here. Take the Bruins at home as they improve to 3-0-0 on the year.

Sabres vs. Bruins Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6 (-110) (4 units)

Buffalo stayed under the total in their season-opening contest as they saw a total of four goals in their loss to the Rangers. Last season, the Sabres had an average total of 6.73 goals per game, and that number edged up slightly to 6.81 goals per game on the road. Boston has seen the over post a 1-1 mark on the year. The Bruins have an average total of 5.50 goals per game in the early going this season, and that number climbs to seven goals at home. Last season, the Bruins had an average total of 6.01 goals per game, and that number slipped to 5.78 goals per game at home. With Buffalo blanked in the opener and Boston being a bit fatigued, this game winds up falling under the total.
