Use Code WWWC Buffalo Sabres (11-13-4) vs. Edmonton Oilers (13-11-5)
The 2025-26 NHL season continues Tuesday, December 9, with the Buffalo Sabres facing off against the Edmonton Oilers in the cross-conference showdown at Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB, so we’ve prepared the Sabres vs. Oilers prediction to get you covered.
Buffalo and Edmonton close down their two-game regular-season series. On November 17, the Sabres beat the Oilers 5-1 as +135 home underdogs, and the game went under the 6.5-goal line. Now, the Sabres are looking for their third straight victory over the Oilers.
Let’s look closer at this Sabres vs. Oilers prediction, one of our NHL picks for Tuesday’s card. Edmonton opens as a firm -235 home fave with a total of 6.5 goals, and the puck drop is set at 9:00 PM ET.
The Sabres play without rest
Monday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the Buffalo Sabres visited the Calgary Flames on Monday night, looking to snap their two-game skid. In their previous two outings, the Sabres have recorded road losses against the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 and the Winnipeg Jets 4-1.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was in the starter’s crease at Buffalo’s Monday morning skate, which means Colten Ellis should tend the twine on Tuesday night. Luukkonen gave up three goals on 22 shots in that 4-1 loss at Winnipeg, while Ellis yielded five goals on 35 shots in a 5-2 defeat at Philadelphia.
Ellis is 4-3-0 with a troublesome 3.40 GAA and a .892 save percentage this season. The Sabres allow 3.43 goals per game (27th in the NHL) despite leading the league in penalty killing (87.2%). They are 20th in goals for (2.93 per game) and 21st in power-play percentage (18.1%).
Winger Alex Tuch leads the way for the Sabres with nine goals and 15 assists, while center Tage Thompson has amassed 12 goals and 10 assists this season. Defenseman Michael Kesselring is out with a lower-body injury.
The Oilers aim for their third straight W
The Edmonton Oilers have yet to win three straight games in 2025-26, which tells a lot about their consistency. The reigning Stanley Cup vice-champions will have a chance to do it on Tuesday night after beating the Seattle Kraken 9-4 and the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 in their previous two outings.
Last Thursday, the Oilers smashed the Kraken at Rogers Place, scoring three goals in each period. Connor McDavid posted his 13th career hat trick, while Calvin Pickard yielded four goals on 28 shots. Two days later, six Oilers found the back of the net, including Leon Draisaitl, while Stuart Skinner gave up two goals on 21 shots.
Skinner is expected to get another starting call when the Sabres come to town. The 27-year-old netminder is 10-8-3 with a 2.86 GAA and a .889 save percentage this season. The Oilers allow 3.45 goals per game (tied for 28th in the NHL) and score 3.31 goals in return (7th).
McDavid is having another terrific season. The 28-year-old center has accounted for 14 goals and 28 assists across 29 games. Fellow center Leon Draisaitl has recorded 17 goals and 20 assists, while defenseman Evan Bouchard has five goals and 22 dishes on his season tally. Center Jack Roslovic (G10, A8) is out with an undisclosed injury.
Sabres vs. Oilers Pick
Spread Pick for Sabres vs. Oilers
- Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (5 units)
The Oilers’ offense has been unstoppable over the last two games, and I expect another strong performance when the Sabres visit Rogers Place. Buffalo will have to deal with fatigue on the second night of a back-to-back set, and the Sabres are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination.
Buffalo’s penalty killing will be properly tested in this game. Edmonton is tied with Pittsburgh for the best power-play percentage in the NHL (33.3%), and the Oilers have gone 5-for-6 with the man advantage over their previous two outings.
The Oilers will be highly motivated to avenge that 5-1 defeat at Buffalo. They outshot the Sabres 33-28, but Colton Ellis had a big night in the crease. I highly doubt his chances of slowing the Oilers down once more. Ellis has allowed a staggering 13 goals across his last three starts.
Over/Under Pick for Sabres vs. Oilers
- Over 6.5 (5 units)
Unlike Colton Ellis, Stuart Skinner has done a great job over his previous three starts, allowing just three goals in the process. Yet, it’s hard to trust the Oilers’ defense. Edmonton is 18th in the league in both penalty killing (80.8%) and expected goals against at even strength.
Hereof, I will take the over on the total. Given the way the Oilers’ offense has been playing lately, Edmonton could easily score five or more goals on its own. The Sabres are eighth in the NHL in expected goals for at even strength, so I expect them to help the over backers.
