Buffalo meets Seattle for the first time this season. Since the Kraken joined the NHL, Seattle has dominated Buffalo, winning seven of their eight encounters. Last season, the Kraken outscored the Sabres 12-6 in a two-game set (6-2 and 6-4).
Now, let’s take a closer look at this Sabres vs. Kraken prediction, one of our NHL picks for Sunday’s card. The Sabres open as -128 moneyline favorites with a total of 5.5 goals, and the puck drop is set at 8:00 PM ET.

The Sabres eye their third straight win
The Buffalo Sabres will close down their six-game road trip on Sunday night. After three straight defeats at the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2, the Winnipeg Jets 4-1, and the Calgary Flames 7-4, the Sabres strung together a couple of wins over the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in overtime and the Vancouver Canucks 3-2.
The Sabres blew a three-goal lead in Edmonton, but they found a way to escape with an overtime victory. Against the Canucks, the Sabres overcame a 2-1 deficit despite being outshot 32-15 on the night.
Colten Ellis suffered a concussion against the Oilers, and Alex Lyon yielded three goals on 24 shots in relief. Lyon was outstanding against the Canucks, improving to 5-6-3 on the season. He has a 3.13 GAA and a .902 save percentage, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is 4-5-1 with a 2.91 GAA and a .884 save percentage.
The Sabres allow 3.48 goals per game (tied for 27th in the NHL) and score 3.00 goals in return (tied for 17th). Center Tage Thompson leads the charge with 15 goals and 13 assists, while winger Alex Tuch has recorded 11 goals and 15 assists. Tuch missed the Canucks game due to illness and is considered day-to-day.
The Kraken are desperate for wins
The Seattle Kraken have only won one of their previous eight games overall. After stopping their six-game slide with a 3-2 overtime victory to the Los Angeles Kings, the Kraken suffered a 5-3 loss at the Utah Mammoth this past Friday.
Joey Daccord broke out of his funk last Wednesday, posting 24 saves in that overtime win against the Kings. Philipp Grubauer guarded the cage against the Mammoth, surrendering three goals on 27 shots. Utah scored a couple of empty-netters before Seattle made it 5-3.
Daccord snapped his five-game skid (0-4-1) against Los Angeles. He’s expected to tend the twine against the Sabres on Sunday, and the 29-year-old netminder carries an 8-7-4 record with a 2.94 GAA and a .893 save percentage. Grubauer is 4-1-1 with a 2.54 GAA and a .900 save percentage this season.
Seattle ranks 16th in the league in goals against (3.00 per game) and 31st in goals for (2.52). Winger Jordan Eberle leads the way with nine goals and nine assists, while center Matty Beniers has amassed four goals and 13 assists.
Sabres vs. Kraken Pick
Moneyline Pick for Sabres vs. Kraken
- Buffalo Sabres -117 (5 units)
The Kraken have struggled to score all season. Now, they have serious injury problems. Seattle cannot count on winger Jared McCann (G5, A3) and centers Jaden Schwartz (G8, A7) and Berkly Catton (A5). Schwartz has been their best player for most of the season.
Hereof, I have to go with the Sabres, even though I don’t trust this Buffalo team at all. Their defense at even strength has been pretty bad thus far, and the Sabres’ offense is one of the most unpredictable in the league. At least, Buffalo boasts the third-best penalty-killing percentage in the NHL (85.6%).
On the other side, the Kraken’s defense has struggled a lot lately. Seattle has allowed 28 goals over its previous six outings.
Over/Under Pick for Sabres vs. Kraken
- Over 6 (5 units)
Despite the Kraken’s injury woes up front, I will take the over in this game. As I said, Seattle’s defense has been awful over the last six games, and Joey Daccord has been far from his top form. The Kraken are dead last in the league in penalty killing (66.7%).
Buffalo’s defense and goaltending cannot be trusted, so I expect the Kraken to add to the scoreboard. Moreover, there is a strong over trend in this series. Seven of eight encounters between Buffalo and Seattle have gone over the total, including the previous five.
