Calgary is expected to take a step back this season
The Calgary Flames finished last season with 96 points, which is a rarity, as 96 points is normally enough to qualify for the playoffs. Oddsmakers predict Calgary to finish with 80.2 points this season. Calgary added a pair of highly talented centers in the 2025 draft in Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter, who will join Zayne Parekh, Dustin Wolf, and Matt Coronato, among others, returning from last season. Calgary also added Ivan Prosevtov and Nick Cicek, but lost Dan Vladar, Anthony Mantah, Tyson Barrie, and Kevin Rooney.
Calgary had two 50-point-plus scores last season in Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau, but will start the season without Huberdeau. Both will likely be on the second line behind the highly talented young players on the roster. The defense is led by Parekh, who last season had 107 points in the OHL for Saginaw. The remainder of the defense is a mix of players with experience and talented newcomers. Calgary is set when it comes to goaltending.Β Dustin Wolf was 29-16-8 with a 2.65 goals against average, .910 save percentage, and 3 shutouts in 53 appearances between the pipes.
Edmonton should battle for another Western Conference title
Last season, the Edmonton Oilers were 48-29-5 with 101 points, losing in the Stanley Cup finals, but although they start without Zach Hyman, they are expected to battle for a Western Conference title and the Stanley Cup. Edmonton lost some key players such as Evander Kane, Viktor Arvidsson, and Jeff Skinner, but the additions of Andrew Mangiapane, Ike Howard, Curtis Lazar, and Riley Stillman more than compensate for those losses. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl produce points better than any other two players in the NHL and will do so again this season for the Oilers.

Edmonton's defense did not have the best of regular seasons last year, finishing 14th in goals against per game, 16th in penalty kill percentage, and those numbers did not improve during the playoffs. The blue line looks almost the same for Edmonton this season as it did last season, except John Klingberg is gone, with Ty Emberson likely taking his place. In goal, Edmonton has Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard returning, with Skinner the expected starter on opening night.
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Pick
Spread Pick for Flames vs. Oilers
- Edmonton Oilers -1.5Β (4 units)
Edmonton has two of the best players in the NHL in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who both will once again be in the top three in points, unless sidelined with injuries. The Oilers return many of the same faces on the blue line, which is not the best, but when mixed with a high-scoring attack, they get the job done. Goalie Stuart Skinner is expected to improve from last season, which will make the Oilers even tougher each night. Edmonton will miss the offensive talents of Zach Hyman (IR), who last season in 73 games scored 27 goals and added 17 assists, but has a wrist injury and will be out long-term. Calgary will be without Jonathan Huberdeau, who is out injured, and last season had 62 points on 28 goals and 34 assists. His absence leaves an early-season hole at left wing on the Flamesβ No. 1 line. Look for Edmonton to come out firing on all cylinders to start the season strong, after struggling early last season.
Over/Under Pick for Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers
- Over 6 (5 units)
Edmonton is expected to once again be one of the highest scoring teams in the NHL, with McDavid and Draisaitl leading the way. Calgary has a solid goalie in Dustin Wolf, but will face a barrage of shots early and often on the road Wednesday. Dating back to last season, the total has finished over in all of Calgary's last five games and in six of Edmonton's last seven games.
