The Flames look to get back on track
The Calgary Flames have gotten things going lately. They are 7-3-1 in their last 11 games overall, and the Flames just put an end to their three-game winning streak. After beating the Minnesota Wild 4-1, the Utah Mammoth 2-0, and the Buffalo Sabres 7-4, Calgary closed down its four-game homestand with a 4-3 loss against the Detroit Red Wings last Wednesday.
The Flames outshot the Red Wings 37-29 and nearly erased a four-goal deficit. With 5:20 left on the clock in the third period, MacKenzie Weegar scored his second goal of the season to make it 4-3, but the Flames couldn’t force overtime.
Devin Cooley gave up four goals on 29 shots last Wednesday. Dustin Wolf is expected to return to the crease on Saturday and search for his fourth straight win. Wolf is 9-12-2 with a 2.95 GAA and a .897 save percentage this season.
The Flames allow 2.94 goals per game (tied for 14th in the NHL) and score 2.50 goals in return (tied for 31st). Center Nazem Kadri leads the way for Calgary with six goals and 22 assists, while winger Matt Coronato has amassed 10 goals and nine assists. Kadri has recorded five assists and a goal in his last three games.
The Kings’ shaky form continues
The Los Angeles Kings have gone 4-3-4 in their last 11 games overall. Last Wednesday, the Kings failed to extend their winning streak to three games. After beating the Chicago Blackhawks 6-0 and the Utah Mammoth 4-2, the Kings suffered a 3-2 overtime defeat at the Seattle Kraken.
The Kraken outshot the Kings 33-26, and Los Angeles blew a 2-1 lead. Alex Laferriere and Kevin Fiala found the back of the net for the Kings, while Anton Forsberg gave up three goals on 33 shots, falling to 4-2-3 on the season.
Darcy Kuemper is expected to guard the cage Saturday against the Flames. The 35-year-old netminder is 10-6-5 with a strong 2.23 GAA and a .914 save percentage this season. He’s 2-2-0 with a shiny 1.53 GAA and a .942 save percentage in December.
The Kings allow 2.50 goals per game (3rd in the NHL) and tally 2.70 goals in return (28th). Winger Adrian Kempe leads the charge with 10 goals and 17 assists, while fellow winger Kevin Fiala has accounted for 11 goals and 11 assists. Kempe has recorded at least a point in five of his past six games.
Flames vs. Kings Pick
Spread Pick for Flames vs. Kings
- Los Angeles Kings -1.5 (5 units)
There’s no value on the Kings’ moneyline, but there’s no value on the Flames’ puckline either. Hereof, I will hold my nose and take the Kings to beat the puckline at +140.
I will rely on Darcy Kuemper and the Kings’ defense to make the difference in this game. Both teams have struggled to score for most of the season, though they’ve shown signs of life over the last few games.
Anyway, both clubs lean on a sturdy defense, and Kuemper has allowed more than two goals just once in his last eight starts. Dustin Wolf has allowed three or more goals in four of his previous seven starts. In his last outing, Wolf gave up four goals on 29 shots in a 7-4 victory over the Sabres.
Over/Under Pick for Flames vs. Kings
- Under 5.5 (5 units)
The Kings are a much better defensive team than the Sabres, and the Flames won’t score seven goals in this game. Calgary scored three goals against Detroit last Wednesday, and the Red Wings have struggled to defend a lot lately.
I expect the Kings to continue with their impressive defensive performance. The Flames will look to tighten things up after yielding eight goals in their past two games, so I will take the under in this one.
Both Calgary and LA have struggled to score with the man advantage this season. The Flames are 30th in the league in power-play percentage (14.6%), and the Kings are dead last in this category (14.0%).
