Calgary Looking to Earn Road Victory

Calgary picked up a point for the fifth time in six games, though they were beaten in overtime on the road by Carolina on Sunday. The Flames dropped to 9-14-4 on the year and stand last in the Pacific Division, nine points behind Anaheim for the top spot. Calgary is 32nd in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 2.33 goals per contest. The Flames are tied for 15th in the league in goals against by allowing 2.96 goals a night this season. The Flames are 10th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 81.8% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Carolina, Calgary played solid defensive hockey but ended up falling in overtime Sunday, though they did manage to secure a point. The Flames were outshot 8-3 in the opening period but the game was scoreless after 20 minutes of action. In the middle stanza, Calgary held an 8-4 advantage in shots with neither side scoring, keeping the game 0-0 at the second intermission. The third period saw the shots even at five with neither team denting the twine, sending the game to overtime scoreless at the end of regulation. In the extra session, Calgary was outshot 2-0 and outscored 1-0 to wind up with the loss. Devin Cooley made 16 saves for the Flames, who were outshot 17-16, in the loss. Dustin Wolf (6-12-2, 3.17 GAA, .890 save percentage, shutout) is expected to get the start in goal here.

Key Injury Report for Flames:

  • Center Martin Pospisil (undisclosed) is out.
  • Defenseman Zayne Parekh (upper body) is out.
  • Left wing Samuel Honzek (upper body) is out.

Predators Seek to Beat Flames for Third Straight Meeting

Nashville saw their two-game win streak snapped as they was dumped at home by Winnipeg Saturday night in their previous contest. The Predators entered Monday night 8-13-4 on the season and stood last in the Central Division, 22 points behind the Avalanche for the top spot. Nashville is 30th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 2.52 goals per contest this season. The Predators are 23rd in goals against by allowing an average of 3.42 goals per game on the year. Nashville is tied for 21st in the league in power play success as they cash in on 16.7% of their chances with the man advantage. The Predators are tied for 12th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 81.3% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Winnipeg, Nashville fell behind early and never dug their way out as they took the loss. The Predators were outshot 9-5 in the opening period of play and skated off trailing 2-0 on the scoreboard at the first intermission. In the second period, Nashville saw the shots even at nine with each team scoring once, leaving them down 3-1 after 40 minutes of play. Evangelista got the Predators within a goal with his fourth goal of the year at 2:45, with assists going to Haula and Roman Josi. That was as close as Nashville would get as they gave up the final two goals of the game to wind up with the loss. Justus Annunen made 20 saves for Nashville, who were outshot 25-22, in the loss. Juuse Saros (7-8-3, 3.08 GAA, .888 save percentage) is expected to be between the pipes for the Predators here.

Flames vs. Predators Moneyline Pick

  • Predators -120 (4 units)

Nashville has won the last two meetings between the teams, including a win last month at home. The Flames have gone 4-1-1 in their last six games but they still struggle to put the puck in the net with any consistency this season. Nashville is no great shakes at home, going 5-8-2 on the year, but that is better than Calgary’s 5-10-2 mark on the road this season. The Predators had won two straight before falling Saturday, but they do have a rest advantage going for them here. Look for Nashville to take advantage of Calgary’s offensive woes on the road to skate away with a victory.

Flames vs. Predators Over/Under Pick

  • Under 5.5 (+100) (4 units)

Calgary, despite their offensive woes, have seen the over post a 14-10-3 mark in their 27 games on the year. The Flames have an average total of 5.30 goals per game and that number bumps up to 5.71 goals per game in their 17 road tilts. Of course, the Flames average just 2.35 goals per game on the road this season. Nashville has seen the under post 13-12 mark in their 25 games on the year. The Predators have seen an average total of 6.20 goals per game this season and that number ships to six goals per game on home ice. Nashville has averaged just 2.40 goals per game on home ice. Look for this game to wind up falling short of the total as both teams struggle to light the lamp.
