Capitals vs. Sharks, Picks and Prediction for Wednesday, December 3, 2025
Washington Capitals (15-9-2) vs. San Jose Sharks (13-11-3)
The 2025-26 NHL season goes on Wednesday, December 3, with the Washington Capitals taking on the San Jose Sharks in the cross-conference showdown at SAP Center at San Jose, so we have prepared the Capitals vs. Sharks prediction to get you covered.
The Capitals meet the Sharks for the first time this season. They split a two-game set in 2024-25, with each team grabbing a victory at home. The Sharks outlasted the Capitals 2-1 in overtime, and Washington responded with a 5-1 win.
Let’s look closer at this Capitals vs. Sharks prediction, one of our NHL picks for Tuesday’s card. Washington opens as a -144 road fave with a total of 6.0 goals, and the puck drop is set at 10:00 PM ET.

The Capitals play without rest
Tuesday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the Washington Capitals visited the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night, searching for their fifth straight victory. After finishing their four-game homestand with consecutive wins over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1, the Winnipeg Jets 4-3, and the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2, the Caps beat the New York Islanders 4-1 as -125 road favorites last Sunday.
The Capitals needed just 19 shots toward the Islanders’ net to score four goals. Tom Wilson led the way with two goals and an assist, while Logan Thompson made 30 saves to advance to 11-6-1 on the season. Thompson boasts a 2.08 GAA and a .916 save percentage in 2025-26, while Charlie Lindgren carries a 4-3-1 record with an underwhelming 3.12 GAA and a .886 save percentage.
Washington allows just 2.58 goals per game (2nd in the NHL) and scores 3.38 goals in return (7th). Interestingly, the Capitals’ special teams have been terrible this season. Washington ranks 27th in the league in power-play percentage (15.6%) and 29th in penalty killing (71.8%). Just one team has allowed more power-play goals than Washington (22).
The Sharks lack consistency
The San Jose Sharks have gone 5-5-0 over their previous 10 games overall. They are 3-3-0 in the last six, and the Sharks hope to finally string together a couple of wins when the Capitals come to town. San Jose is coming off Monday’s 6-3 home victory over the Utah Mammoth.
San Jose stunned Utah as a +153 underdog. The Mammoth outshot the Sharks 34-30 on the night, but San Jose had a 2-0 lead after eight minutes of play in the first period and a 6-2 lead at the end of the second period.
Tyler Toffoli accounted for a couple of goals and assists last Monday. Will Smith had two goals and an assist, while Macklin Celebrini made three dishes. Yaroslav Askarov posted 31 saves, advancing to 10-6-1 on the season. Askarov holds a 2.96 GAA and a .910 save percentage in 2025-26.
The Sharks allow 3.19 goals per game (tied for 20th in the NHL) and score 2.93 goals in return (21st). They are 17th in the league in power-play percentage (19.2%) and 11th in penalty killing (81.7%).
Capitals vs. Sharks Pick
Moneyline Pick for Caps vs. Sharks
- San Jose Sharks (5 units)
At the time of writing, it was unknown who would guard the cage for the Capitals in San Jose. Logan Thompson was expected to tend the twine on Tuesday night, so we should see Charlie Lindgren in the crease on Wednesday. Lindgren has allowed eight goals over his previous three starts.
On the other side, the Sharks will probably go with Yaroslav Askarov, who went 8-2-0 with a sparkling 1.88 GAA and a .947 save percentage in November. Askarov has been nothing short of spectacular lately, and the Sharks have won seven of their previous eight home games, so I’m backing San Jose to beat Washington.
The Capitals will have to deal with fatigue on the second night of a back-to-back set. Their defense has done a good job this season, but as I noted, the Caps’ penalty killing is bad, and Logan Thompson is arguably a better goalie than Charlie Lindgren.
Over/Under Pick for Caps vs. Sharks
- Under 6.0 (5 units)
The Capitals will look to slow things down as much as possible. The Sharks are one of the youngest teams in the league, and the Capitals take the ice on the back end of a back-to-back set.
San Jose will have to take a cautious approach, too. The Sharks allow too many shots (31.7 per game), and the Capitals lead the league in expected goals for at even strength.
Hereof, I will take the under on the total. Yaroslav Askarov looks like one of the best goalies in the league at the moment, and just two of his previous nine starts have seen more than six goals on the scoreboard.
