The Carolina Hurricanes travel to Alberta on Saturday night to face the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop for this interconference matchup is scheduled for 10:00 PM with television coverage on ESPN+. Carolina enters the contest as one of the top teams in the NHL while Calgary is trying to stop a recent losing streak and regain some confidence at home. At the time of this writing the odds for the moneyline, total, and puck line were not released. Carolina Hurricanes Continue Strong Season

The Carolina Hurricanes enter this matchup with a 39-16-6 overall record and they have also been strong on the road this season with a 16-8-4 record away from home. Carolina has played excellent hockey lately, winning four of their last five games. The Hurricanes recently won over Vancouver, Detroit, Tampa Bay, and the New York Rangers while suffering their only recent loss to Seattle during that stretch.

Carolina has been one of the most complete teams in the league this season thanks to a balanced offensive attack and excellent defensive play. The Hurricanes are averaging 3.44 goals per game while allowing just 2.82 goals per contest. They are also generating an impressive 32.1 shots per game while allowing only 24.3 shots against per game, showing just how well they control puck possession and offensive pressure.

Special teams have also played an important role in Carolina’s success. The Hurricanes have scored 42 power play goals and their power play conversion rate sits at 22.6 percent. Defensively they have allowed 34 power play goals while their penalty kill operates at 80.1 percent. Carolina also has six shorthanded goals this season, which shows their ability to generate scoring chances even when playing a man down.

Calgary Searching for Stability

The Calgary Flames come into this matchup with a 24-30-7 overall record and they have been somewhat competitive at home with a 15-12-4 record at the Saddledome. Unfortunately for Calgary, the team has struggled recently and enters this game having lost four of their last five contests. During that stretch the Flames have recently lost to Ottawa, Dallas, Anaheim, and Los Angeles, with their only victory coming against San Jose.

Offensively the Flames have had difficulty generating consistent scoring this season. Calgary is averaging just 2.45 goals per game despite producing 29 shots per contest. The team has had trouble finishing scoring opportunities, which has been a major reason why they have struggled to keep pace with stronger offensive teams throughout the year.

Defensively Calgary has been slightly better but still inconsistent. The Flames are allowing 2.97 goals per game while giving up 29.4 shots per contest. Special teams have also been an issue. Calgary has scored 29 power play goals but their power play success rate sits at only 16.1 percent. Their penalty kill has been better at 82.4 percent, but the team has taken a large number of penalties with 707 penalty minutes on the season. That lack of discipline has placed the Flames in difficult situations against stronger offensive teams.

Carolina Hurricanes vs Calgary Flames Pick

Hurricanes vs Flames Pick

  • Pick: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline

Carolina enters this game with one of the best records in the league and they have been playing excellent hockey over the last few weeks. The Hurricanes are generating over three goals per game while also allowing one of the lowest shot totals in the league. Calgary, on the other hand, has struggled offensively and is currently dealing with a losing stretch. The Flames have had difficulty finishing scoring chances and their power play has not been particularly effective. With Carolina controlling possession well and entering this game with strong momentum, the Hurricanes appear to have the edge in this matchup.

Hurricanes vs Flames Total Pick

  • Pick: Under

I expect this game to feature a controlled pace with Carolina’s defensive structure playing a big role. The Hurricanes allow only 2.82 goals per game and they do an excellent job limiting opponent shot totals. Calgary has also struggled offensively throughout the season and has averaged just 2.45 goals per game. With Carolina likely dictating the pace and Calgary having difficulty finishing scoring chances, I believe this matchup could lean toward a lower scoring result.

Final Score Prediction: Carolina Hurricanes 3, Calgary Flames 1

This prediction was written before the completion of game play on Friday.
