Use Code WWWC Carolina Hurricanes (5-1-0) vs. Colorado Avalanche (5-0-2)
The 2025 NHL betting action goes on Thursday, October 23, when a couple of legitimate championship contenders lock horns in the cross-conference showdown at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, so here’s our Hurricanes vs. Avalanche prediction.
Carolina meets Colorado for the first time this season. At the moment, the Avalanche are the strongest favorites to win the 2026 Stanley Cup. Their odds sit at +800, while the Hurricanes are listed at +850.
Let’s take a closer look at this Hurricanes vs. Avalanche prediction, one of our NHL picks for Thursday’s card. The puck drop is set at 9:00 PM ET, and Colorado is a -135 moneyline favorite with a total of 6.0 goals.
The Hurricanes’ win streak is over
The Carolina Hurricanes started their 2025-26 campaign with five consecutive wins. After a couple of home victories over the New Jersey Devils 6-3 and the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime, the Canes strung together three road wins against the San Jose Sharks 5-1, the Anaheim Ducks 4-1, and the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in overtime.

The Hurricanes put an end to their winning streak last Monday. They suffered a 4-1 defeat at the Vegas Golden Knights, playing as slight -105 underdogs. Carolina outshot Vegas 27-26, but Akira Schmidt had a big game in the crease for the Golden Knights. On the other side, Frederik Andersen gave up three goals on 25 shots.
Andersen is now 3-1-0 with a 2.46 GAA and a .894 save percentage in 2025-26. Brandon Bussi is 2-0-0 with a 1.97 GAA and a .911 save percentage, while Pyotr Kochetkov is on the IR. Defenseman Jaccob Slavin is out with a lower-body injury, and fellow defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is questionable to play against Colorado.
Centers Seth Jarvis (G6, A3) and Sebastian Aho (G2, A6) lead the way for the Canes, while Gostisbehere has accounted for six assists and a goal in five appearances. The Canes need more from wingers Nikolaj Ehlers and Andrei Svechnikov. Ehlers has one assist on his season tally, while Svechnikov has yet to record a single point this season.
The Avalanche are coming off a tough loss
The Colorado Avalanche put an end to their three-game winning streak last Tuesday. After beating the Buffalo Sabres 3-1, the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1, and the Boston Bruins 4-1, the Avalanche suffered a 4-3 overtime defeat at the Utah Mammoth.
Colorado and Utah took 33 shots each. It was a proper back-and-forth battle, and the Avalanche forced overtime thanks to Martin Necas’ goal with 2:16 left to play in the third period. Cale Makar and Jack Drury also scored for the Avs, while Scott Wedgewood gave up four goals on 33 shots.
Wedgewood has guarded the cage in all seven games this season, posting a shiny 1.84 GAA and a .927 save percentage. The Avs obviously don’t trust their backup, Trent Miner, while Mackenzie Blackwood is sidelined with a lower-body injury. Blackwood should return soon, but it’s not clear when he’ll be officially available.
Forwards Martin Necas (G5, A6) and Nathan MacKinnon (G6, A4) lead the way for the Avalanche. Cale Makar has accounted for three goals and five assists, while winger Artturi Lehkonen has amassed five dishes and two goals. Defenseman Samuel Girard and winger Logan O’Connor are both on the IR.
Hurricanes vs. Avalanche Pick
Moneyline Pick for Hurricanes vs. Avalanche
- Colorado Avalanche (5 units)
The Hurricanes’ blueline has serious injury problems, and the Golden Knights just took advantage of the Canes’ shortcomings. The Canes are a very dangerous offensive team, but I have to look at the Avs, who must be fired up to bounce back from that overtime loss at Utah.
This is Carolina’s fifth straight game away from home, and playing at a high altitude in Denver won’t help the Canes. The Avs are one of the best offensive teams in the league, too, and their defense will play better than it did against the Mammoth.
Over/Under Pick for Hurricanes vs. Avalanche
- Over 6.0 (5 units)
Interestingly, these two teams have been awful with the man advantage thus far. Carolina is 2-for-21, and Colorado is 3-for-26. This will change sooner rather than later, and given the Hurricanes’ injury woes, I expect to see at least goals on the scoreboard in this game.
The Avs have scored three or more goals in five straight outings. The Canes had accounted for at least four goals in five straight games before that 4-1 defeat at Vegas. Both teams have a lot of depth up front, so Frederik Andersen and Scott Wedgewood will have a busy night.
