The Hurricanes’ shaky form continues
The Carolina Hurricanes have dropped three of their previous five games overall, alternating losses and wins in the process. Last Monday, the Canes started a four-game road trip with a 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins. Two days later, Carolina suffered a 4-3 shootout defeat at the Minnesota Wild.
Pyotr Kochetkov posted 29 saves against the Bruins, who scored their lone goal with 10 seconds remaining in the third period. Frederik Andersen guarded the cage against the Wild, yielding three goals on just 19 shots.
The Canes outshot the Wild 45-19 and erased a 3-1 deficit. However, Carolina couldn’t find the back of the net in a shootout. Jackson Blake scored a couple of goals in regulation, increasing his season tally to 13 points (G4, A9).
Carolina scores 3.60 goals per game (3rd in the NHL) and allows 2.85 goals in return (12th). The Canes miss defenseman Jalen Chatfield (A3) and center Jesperi Kotkaniemi (G2, A3). Kochetkov is expected to patrol the crease against Winnipeg, and the 26-year-old goalie is 4-0-0 with a 1.70 GAA and a .926 save percentage this season.
The Jets aim for their third straight W
The Winnipeg Jets have won three of their previous four games overall. After sandwiching a 5-3 loss at the Calgary Flames with a pair of road wins over the Vancouver Canucks 5-3 and the Calgary Flames 4-3 in a shootout, the Jets beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 this past Tuesday.
Winnipeg outshot Columbus 30-22 and fully deserved to win. The Jets went 1-for-2 with the man advantage and allowed just one power-play opportunity to the Blue Jackets. Five Jets found the back of the net, while Mark Scheifele had three assists.
Eric Comrie posted 20 saves against Columbus. Connor Hellebuyck is expected to return to the crease on Friday night, and the 32-year-old netminder is 8-6-0 with a 2.51 GAA and a .913 save percentage this season.
The Jets allow 2.74 goals per game (tied for 7th in the NHL) and score 3.32 goals in return (tied for 6th). Scheifele leads the charge with 11 goals and 16 assists in 19 appearances. The Jets cannot count on defenseman Haydn Fleury due to a concussion.
Hurricanes vs. Jets Pick
Moneyline Pick for Hurricanes vs. Jets
- Carolina Hurricanes (5 units)
This game will be a joy to watch, and it could easily go either way. We’ll see a couple of top-notch goalies, though Connor Hellebuyck has allowed 10 goals over his last three starts. Pyotr Kochetkov has been sensational thus far, so I’m going with the Hurricanes.
Carolina is 22nd in the NHL in shooting percentage (10.5%), and the Canes still boast the third-highest scoring offense. They lead the league in shots on goal (683), and the Jets rank 24th in this category (514).
Moreover, the Canes are tied with the Flames for the worst power-play percentage in the NHL (12.5%). Carolina is a different animal at even strength.
Over/Under Pick for Hurricanes vs. Jets
- Over 5.5 (5 units)
I’m backing the Canes to come out on top, even though the Jets are way more dangerous when playing at home. Winnipeg has scored 23 goals over its previous five outings at home (4-1-0 record). The Jets will have a tall task in this matchup, given Pyotr Kochetkov’s recent form, but they should be able to score a couple of goals.
As I mentioned, the Canes are very dangerous at five-on-five. They are second in the league in high-danger scoring chances (59.7%), and the Jets will struggle to keep the Canes out of their own third. It’s a tricky wager because of the goaltenders, but I have to take the over.
