Tampa Bay Puck Line at -142

Tampa Bay -1.5 at -142 tonight. The Lightning hosting Chicago, — one of the three worst teams in hockey right now. The Blackhawks sit at 4-10-1, nine points, dead last in their division. Scoring 2.25 goals per game while allowing 3.94. But that's a negative goal differential of 1.69 per game, which over 15 games works out to being outscored by roughly 25 goals already. But tampa is 9-3-2 with 20 points and the fourth-highest scoring offense in the NHL at 3.71 per game. All of this screams blowout.

The Blackhawks Offense Has Disappeared

Chicago's power play runs at 10.0% — Dead last in the NHL. One goal for every ten chances. That is genuinely difficult to do. Even bad teams usually convert at 15% or so. When a team can't score on the man advantage, momentum swings disappear. A power play goal changes the whole thing of a hockey game, shifts the crowd, puts the opposition on their heels. Real number. Chicago simply doesn't have that weapon in the arsenal. The penalty kill at 78.8% is passable but irrelevant when the offense puts up 2.25 per game total.
Tampa scores 3.71 per game, fourth in the league behind Colorado, Edmonton, and a couple others. The Lightning's 16.3% power play isn't special, does not need to be. At five-on-five Tampa generates more than enough to bury a team like this. The Lightning have won 9 of 14 games, and the 3 losses came by a combined 5 goals. When Tampa loses they lose close. And when they win, they tend to win big. A $100 bettor on the Tampa moneyline all season is firmly in the black.

Tampa Does What Tampa Does

Spencer Knight is posting a .894 save percentage and 3.28 GAA through 12 starts. Those are backup caliber numbers, 4-8-0 record, on a team that doesn't give him any help. Behind him the defense allows 3.94 per game as a team. Only conclusion: the defense hangs him out to dry, and he's not making the saves to bail them out. Tampa thrives on turnovers and odd-man rushes, chicago's young, fast lineup makes transition mistakes. Scheme mismatch.

Knight Can't Save This Team

Andrei Vasilevskiy, 6-3-1, .877 save percentage this season. Below his career standard, no question — But Tampa wins when Vasilevskiy starts. Every single game. Period, scoring 3.71 per game papers over any goaltending cracks. The Lightning can afford to give up three goals and still cash the puck line. The real edge is that Chicago needs to score at least three to have any chance. And a team averaging 2.25 per game getting to three is a stretch on a good night.

The -142 Number

But at -142 the break-even is 58.7%. A $100 bettor on the Tampa puck line collects $70.42 when it cashes. Against the league's third-worst team, with a goal differential of negative 1.69 per game, multi-goal losses are the norm for Chicago. Not the exception. None the less, the price is steep enough — worth noting — that it needs to hit at a high rate. But Chicago's track record this season suggests they lose by two or more goals far more often than 58.7% of the time.

Wire to Wire for Tampa

Tampa scores first — Chicago doesn't have the horses to match the Lightning's top-six, falls behind early. The Blackhawks claw one back in the second, make it 2-1 or 3-1, but the third period is where Tampa buries this. Tired legs, a demoralized bench, Knight facing 35 shots — The Lightning pour it on.
Tampa 5, Chicago 2. The Hawks score two late to make the box score look respectable. Knight makes a couple nice saves in the second period that keep it close for about 30 minutes. That's the extent of Chicago's contribution tonight. A $100 bettor on this puck line walks away with $70.42 and never breaks a sweat watching the third period. The kind of bet where the outcome is decided by the end of the second.

Chicago's Only Path

The only risk is Chicago playing inspired for one night. Even bad teams have their nights. A random goaltending performance from Knight, a couple fluky goals, and suddenly Tampa only wins by one. It happens. But 2.25 goals per game with a 10.0% power play?, come on. Tampa has too much firepower. But at the end of the day, teams averaging under 2.30 per game don't win outright very often, let alone keep games within one goal against top-ten offenses.

Best Bet

Best Bet: Tampa Bay -1.5 (-142) — A 9-3-2 club scoring 3.71 per game hosting a 4-10-1 team scoring 2.25 with the worst power play in hockey. The gap between these teams is enormous. Prediction: Tampa Bay 5, Chicago 2
