The Avalanche improved to 7-1-4 and entered Friday with a two-point lead over Utah and Winnipeg for the top spot. Against Vegas, Colorado took down the Golden Knights on the road in a battle of teams off to strong starts on Friday. San Jose stands 12th in the league in success with the man advantage as they have cashed in on 23.1% of their power play chances this season. The Sharks are 30th in penalty killing as they have successfully navigated 63.9% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against New Jersey, San Jose jumped in front early in the game and skated away with the home victory Thursday night. The Sharks gave up a goal later in the period to trim the margin to a pair.
