Colorado meets Vancouver for the first time this season. The Canucks swept their three-game set against the Avalanche last season (3-1, 3-0, and 4-1), and Vancouver aims for its fourth straight victory over Colorado.

The Avalanche continue to play well
The Colorado Avalanche are 3-0-1 in their previous four games overall. All three wins came against the top-notch teams, as the Avs beat the New Jersey Devils 8-4, the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2, and the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2.
The loss was a surprising one, as the Avs suffered a 3-2 overtime defeat at the San Jose Sharks, playing as firm -210 road favorites. Mackenzie Blackwood made his season debut in San Jose, returning from a lower-body injury.
Blackwood was projected to get another starting call on Saturday. Scott Wedgewood is expected to guard the cage in Vancouver on Sunday, and the 33-year-old netminder has done a great job thus far, posting an 8-1-2 record with a 2.49 GAA and a .902 save percentage.
The Avs allow 2.50 goals per game (tied for 3rd in the NHL) and score 3.57 goals in return (tied for 6th). Nathan MacKinnon leads the way for Colorado with 10 goals and 10 assists, while Cale Makar (G4, A14) and Martin Necas (G9, A9) have recorded 18 points each.
The Canucks’ shaky form goes on
The Vancouver Canucks are 3-3-0 in their previous six games overall, alternating wins and losses in the process. All three wins came in overtime or a shootout, while all three defeats came in regulation.
Last Wednesday, the Canucks started their four-game homestand with a 5-2 defeat against the Chicago Blackhawks. Vancouver outshot Chicago 45-28 on the night, but it wasn’t enough. Kevin Lankinen gave up four goals on 27 shots, and the 30-year-old goalie is now 2-4-0 with a 3.62 GAA and a .880 save percentage in 2025-26.
Lankinen was projected to guard the cage against the Blue Jackets on Saturday. Thatcher Demko (5-4-0 with a 2.57 GAA and a .911 SV%) is dealing with an injury, and the 29-year-old netminder is considered day-to-day. Jiri Patera might get the starting call on Sunday.
The Canucks allow 3.33 goals per game (25th in the NHL) and tally 2.67 goals in return (27th). Connor Garland leads the charge for Vancouver with three goals and 11 assists, while Kiefer Sherwood is the team’s top goalscorer with nine.
Avalanche vs. Canucks Pick
Spread Pick for Avalanche vs. Canucks
- Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (5 units)
With both teams taking the ice on the second night of a back-to-back, I can only look at the Avalanche. Colorado is arguably a deeper and better team than Vancouver. Moreover, the Canucks might have to go with Jiri Patera in the net, and the 26-year-old netminder hasn’t played in the NHL since March 2024.
The Avalanche will probably go with Scott Wedgewood, who’s emerged victorious in three straight starts. As I noted, Wedgewood has been excellent for the Avalanche so far this season. The moneyline odds are not attractive, but I think that Colorado will be able to beat the puckline.
Over/Under Pick for Avalanche vs. Canucks
- Under 6.0 (5 units)
The Avs’ defense has been solid thus far. Their penalty killing has been terrific (90.5%, 2nd in the NHL), whereas Vancouver’s penalty killing has been awful (68.0%, 31st). Add Jiri Patera’s probable start to the equation, and the total looks like a tricky wager in this game.
I lean toward the under because it’s the second night of a back-to-back for both teams. The Canucks have to slow things down. They don’t have enough offensive firepower to compete against the Avalanche.
Just one of Colorado’s last seven showings on the second night of a back-to-back has seen more than six goals on the scoreboard. When it comes to Vancouver, the under is 10-4 in the Canucks’ last 14 outings on the back end of a back-to-back set.
