Columbus has struggled on both ends of the ice

The Blue Jackets are having a rough season with their offense struggling and scoring only 2.80 goals per game with only eight goals in the last four games. Dmitry Voronkov and Adam Fantilli have 18 goals and 17 assists while defenseman Zach Werenski has nine goals and 15 assists but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four active skaters have six goals or more and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has let them down, but the defense has also played poorly, 3.24 goals per game, including 15 goals in the last four games. Zach Werenski and Ivan Provorov have combined for 3.3 defensive point shares, but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. Additionally, goaltender Jet Greeves has unraveled in his latest starts, allowing 10 goals in his last three starts.

Key injury report for Blue Jackets

  • Kirill Marchenko (undisclosed) is out for the upcoming game. Has eight goals and 14 assists.

Devils will look for offense to keep carrying them

The Devils are having a great season thanks to their offense, which is scoring 3.12 goals per game with 15 goals in their last four games. Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, and Timo Meier have scored 23 goals and 45 assists, while defensemen Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec have added seven goals and 22 assists from the point to open up the offense.

The offense has carried the Devils but the defense has also stepped up, allowing only 2.96 goals per game. Nemec and Hughes have combined for 2.7 defensive point shares while Dougie Hamilton and Jonas Seigenthaler have combined for 2.4 defensive point shares to add depth to the unit. The hope is that goaltender Jacob Markstrom improves as he’s struggled all season with -7.5 goals saved above average and has played poorly lately as well, allowing 14 goals in his last four starts.

  • Evgenii Dadonov (undisclosed) is expected to miss an extended period of time.

Blue Jackets vs Devils Pick

Money Line Pick For Blue Jackets vs Devils

  • Devils (-155) (4 units)

The Blue Jackets have four losses in a row, and the Devils look to take over this game on their home ice as a result. The Devils, who average 3.12 goals per game, should pile on the goals against the Blue Jackets, who have allowed 15 goals in the last four games, with Jesper Bratt, Timo Meier, and the rest of the forward unit controlling the puck in the offensive zone while creating open shots with quick passes. The Devils, who allow only 2.96 goals per game, should limit the Blue Jackets offense, which has scored only eight goals in the last four games, with Simon Nemec, Luke Hughes, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone while limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Jacob Markstrom to rebound from a game where he allowed four goals and make plenty of big saves. The Devils should win the game in a dominant performance on their home ice.

Take the Devils money line as home Favorites.

Over/Under Pick For Blue Jackets vs Devils

  • Over 6.5 (5 Units)

With two struggling goaltenders in the net, this game looks to be a high-scoring one from the opening puck drop. The Blue Jackets look to create plenty of offense against Jacob Markstrom, who has allowed 14 goals in his last four starts, with Dmitry Voronkov, Adam Fantilli, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone while defenseman Zach Werenski fires shots on the net from the blue line. The Devils look to build off of four games where they scored 15 goals and run up the score against Jet Greeves, who has allowed 10 goals in the last three starts, with Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, Timo Meier, and the rest of the forward unit establishing a strong offensive zone presence and creating open shots with effective puck movement while defensemen Simon Nemec and Luke Hughes pick apart the Blue Jackets from the point. The Over should cover in a high-scoring game with both offenses stepping up.

Take the Over on 6.5 goals.

The Blue Jackets face the Devils with both teams on opposite ends of the Metropolitan Division to start the season.
