Dallas Stars vs Chicago Blackhawks Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Saturday October 17 2026

Dallas visits Chicago with a 3-3-1 record, an underwhelming start for a club with one of the league's strongest veteran cores. The Blackhawks are 3-5-0 and have shown more offense since Connor Bedard returned, but they remain vulnerable to heavy pressure from deeper rosters. Dallas is an expensive favorite with a regular moneyline above -200. That makes the puck line a better way to express the view that the Stars can establish a lead, protect it behind Jake Oettinger and eventually create a two-goal margin.
Chicago has a clear route to making the contest difficult. Bedard can generate chances without needing sustained possession, Patrick Kane supplies another elite playmaking brain, and the Blackhawks recently showed resilience in a 4-3 overtime win at Minnesota. Dallas therefore cannot treat this as a simple mismatch. The Stars need sharper neutral-zone structure than they have displayed during parts of their opening week and must prevent Chicago's dangerous first line from turning loose pucks into repeated odd-man situations.

Dallas Stars Betting Analysis

Dallas has Jason Robertson with Roope Hintz and Jamie Benn on its projected first line, while Mikko Rantanen supports the group behind them and Wyatt Johnston returns after missing two games with illness. The return of Johnston gives the Stars another reliable driver who can support transition and finish chances from the slot. Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley provide high-end skating and passing from the defense, making Dallas difficult to contain once it establishes controlled exits. Its offense has more paths to quality chances than Chicago's younger roster.
Matt Duchene is injured, but Dallas still has enough experienced talent to build dangerous combinations across several lines. Oettinger is confirmed and enters with a 2-2-1 record, excellent 1.20 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. Those numbers contrast sharply with the Stars' middling record, suggesting that their main problem has not been sustained weakness in goal. Dallas should be able to support Oettinger by limiting Chicago's second-chance opportunities and using its forwards to keep the puck in the offensive zone.

Chicago Blackhawks Betting Analysis

Chicago's projected first line includes Roman Kantserov, Bedard and Kane, with Tyler Bertuzzi, Anton Frondell and Teuvo Teravainen behind them. Frank Nazar and Ryan Donato give the third line more skill than the club has sometimes carried in past seasons. The Blackhawks are dangerous when their top players can attack into space, and any Dallas defender who presses carelessly could give Bedard the sort of instant transition opportunity that changes the scoreboard.
The issue is how Chicago survives long defending shifts. Bowen Byram is unavailable with an upper-body injury, leaving the Blackhawks thinner against Dallas's repeated attacks. Spencer Knight is confirmed for a fourth consecutive start and enters 3-3-0 with a 3.51 goals-against average and .891 save percentage. Knight is capable of saving the game if he sees shots clearly, but Chicago's defensive organization must keep Robertson, Johnston and Rantanen away from rebounds and second opportunities. Otherwise the matchup can tilt strongly toward the visitor.

Stars vs Blackhawks Matchup and Odds

The Stars' best blueprint is to keep Chicago's top unit defending rather than allowing Bedard to attack. Heiskanen's ability to retrieve and move the puck quickly should help Dallas defeat the first layer of the Blackhawks' forecheck. From there, Dallas can use its larger forwards to cycle below the goal line and wear down a defense missing Byram. Chicago will attempt to counter with speed and power-play skill, meaning Dallas must resist taking unnecessary penalties when it has the territorial advantage.
The earlier market listed Dallas around -215, and later listings put the favorite between -217 and -227. That straight moneyline is too expensive for the preferred bet ceiling, but Dallas -1.5 has appeared around +119. The puck line changes the wager: a 3-2 Dallas win does not cash, even though it would validate the direction of the favorite handicap. The better payout is warranted by the Stars' depth and Oettinger's advantage, but bettors must accept the additional variance.
Chicago's offense makes a clean shutout unlikely, so the stronger two-goal case involves Dallas scoring three or four goals and preserving enough defensive discipline to keep the Blackhawks from trading chance for chance. If Chicago trails by one entering the final minutes, a pulled goaltender can also create a cover opportunity. None of that guarantees a margin. It simply means Dallas has more than one realistic path to a 4-2 outcome if its top forwards consistently control possession.

Best Bet

Best Bet: Dallas Stars -1.5 at +115 or better. The regular moneyline is not attractive enough, but a plus-money puck line is defensible against a Chicago defense playing without Byram. Oettinger's confirmed start, Johnston's return and Dallas's deeper offensive lineup supply the principal advantages. Bedard is capable of keeping the game close, so the extra goal must be compensated by a favorable return rather than accepted at an expensive price. Prediction: Dallas Stars 4, Chicago Blackhawks 2.
