The Stars’ win streak is over
The Dallas Stars put an end to their five-game winning streak last Tuesday, suffering a 3-2 home defeat against the New York Islanders. Jason Robertson scored a couple of goals, but the Stars went 0-for-3 with the man advantage and gave up a shorthanded goal to the Islanders.
Jake Oettinger yielded three goals on 22 shots last Tuesday. Wyatt Johnson tied the game with 0.1 seconds left on the clock, but his goal was waved off by official review for goaltender interference caused by Robertson.
It was a tough loss for the Stars, who couldn’t count on defensemen Thomas Harley (G1, A9) and Ilya Lyubushkin (A4). Center Matt Duchene hasn’t played since October 18, and he’s questionable for Thursday’s clash against Vancouver.
The Stars tally 3.20 goals per game (tied for 11th in the NHL), and Mikko Rantanen leads the way with nine goals and 18 assists. Oettinger is 8-4-2 with a 2.77 GAA and a .898 save percentage this season, while Casey DeSmith is 4-1-1 with a 2.29 GAA and a .913 save percentage.
Key Injuries for Stars:
- C Matt Duchene (upper body) is out.
- D Thomas Harley (lower body) is out. Has 1a, 9g
- D Ilya Lyubushkin is out.
The Canucks continue to struggle
The Vancouver Canucks haven’t won consecutive games since October 19. They are 1-2-2 in the past five outings. After stopping a three-game slide with a 6-2 road victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Canucks finished their three-game road trip with an 8-5 defeat at the Florida Panthers this past Monday.
It was a wild game at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, FL. The Panthers overcame a 2-0 deficit with five straight goals before the Canucks tied the game at 5-5 early in the third period. Vancouver couldn’t hold on, and Jiri Patera gave up seven goals on 40 shots in his Canucks debut.
Elias Pettersson scored a couple of goals against Florida, while Quinn Hughes made three assists. Hughes now has one goal and 19 assists on his season tally, and Pettersson has accounted for six goals and 13 dishes.
The Canucks score 3.10 goals per game (tied for 16th in the NHL) and allow 3.67 goals in return (30th). Kevin Lankinen is expected to guard the cage against Dallas, and the 30-year-old netminder is 4-5-2 with a 3.44 GAA and a .890 save percentage this season.
Key Injuries for Canucks:
- Thatcher Demko (lower body) is week-to-week. Is 5-4 with a 2.80 GAA and a .903 save percentage.
Stars vs. Canucks Pick
Spread Pick for Stars vs. Canucks
- Dallas Stars -1.5 (5 units)
The Canucks miss their starting goalie, Thatcher Demko (5-4-0; 2.80 GAA; .903 SV%). Centers Filip Chytil and Teddy Blueger are both on the IR, too, while winger Conor Garland (G5, A8) is questionable after missing the Panthers game with an undisclosed injury.
Vancouver will have a tall task to upset Dallas. Kevin Lankinen has struggled so far this season, and the Stars are a very dangerous offensive team. During their five-game winning streak, the Stars have scored 22 goals. They boast the fourth-best shooting percentage in the league (12.5%).
Hereof, I expect the Stars to bounce back from that tough loss against the Islanders and beat the Canucks by two or more goals.
Over/Under Pick for Stars vs. Canucks
- Over 6.0 (5 units)
The Canucks have struggled to defend thus far, mostly because Kevin Lankinen has been far from his 2024-25 form. Last season, Lankinen had a 2.62 GAA and a .902 save percentage in 49 starts and two relief appearances.
The Stars are ninth in the league in goals against (2.80 per game), though Jake Oettinger hasn’t impressed. Casey DeSmith has done a great job this season, but I expect to see Oettinger in the net on Thursday night.
Dallas is second in the NHL in power-play percentage (31.9%), and Vancouver ranks ninth in this category (23.5%). Both teams have struggled to defend with the man down, so give me the over on the total. Vancouver is dead last in penalty killing (67.1%), and Dallas is 25th (76.3%).
