Stars Hoping Change at the Top Leads to Success

Dallas finished second in the Central Division and reached the Western Conference Finals for the third straight year last season before getting dropped by Edmonton. While most teams would be happy for that showing, the Stars made a change, firing Peter DeBoer, who had the leagueโ€™s best points percentage (.665) during his tenure, after the season. Glen Gulutzan, who coached the Stars from 2011-13 and spent the last seven seasons as an assistant with the Oilers, is back behind the bench. He inherits a team that is pretty much intact from last season. The lone acquisitions the team made in free agency were the additions of Radek Faksa (Blues) and Nathan Bastian (Devils) during the summer. Dallas lost a few pieces as Mikael Granlund (Ducks), Cody Ceci (Kings), Evgenii Dadonov (Devils) and Matej Blumel (Bruins) all inked deals elsewhere. They also must replace Mason Marchment, who was traded to Seattle. Matt Duchene led the Stars with 82 points last season, while Jason Robertson dented the twine a team-high 35 times to pace the team in that department.

Last season, Dallas finished tied for 3rd in the league in goals per game as they averaged 3.35 goals per contest. The Stars finished 6th in the league in goals against as they allowed an average of 2.71 goals a night last season. Dallas was 17th when it comes to success on the power play as they converted on 22% of their chances with the man advantage in the 2024-25 campaign. The Stars were tied for 4th in penalty killing as they successfully navigated 82% of their shorthanded situations on the year. Jake Oettinger, who made 58 starts for the Stars last season before clashing with DeBoer in the postseason, is slated to get the start here. He was 36-18-4 with a 2.59 GAA, a .909 save percentage and two shutouts last season.

Winnipeg Trying to Take Another Step in 2025-26

Winnipeg won the Central Division title last season, racking up a franchise record 116 points, but faltered in the postseason. After being pushed to double overtime in Game 7 by St. Louis in the opening round before advancing, the Jets fell to Dallas in six games in the second round. Winnipeg signed Kyle Connor to an eight-year extension in the offseason while their other acquisitions were one-year depth deals. Gustav Nyquist (Wild), Tanner Pearson (Golden Knights) and Cole Koepke (Bruins) are the biggest signings the team made in the offseason. There are some major pieces they have to replace, though, as Nikolaj Ehlers (Hurricanes), Brandon Tanev (Mammoth), Mason Appleton (Red Wings) and Dominic Toninato (Blackhawks) have moved on in the offseason. Kyle Connor led Winnipeg with 41 goals and 97 points last season.

Stars vs. Jets Pick

Stars vs. Jets Moneyline Pick

  • Jets -102

Neither team was overly proactive, deciding that their rosters from last year were good enough to carry them to the postseason again. The Stars have to hope that the departure of DeBoer and reimplementation of Gulutzan as head coach wonโ€™t throw things off for the team. Dallas has to hope it can mend fences with Oettinger after the bad blood that seemed to bubble up in the postseason. Winnipeg has to replace Ehlers, which is going to be a test for Scott Arnielโ€™s group. Hellebuyck was tremendous last season, hence his winning of the Hart for Most Valuable Player and the Vezina as the leagueโ€™s top goaltender. Look for the Jets to find a way to do enough offensively to win a tight contest.

Stars vs. Jets Over/Under Pick

  • Under 5.5 (-105)

Dallas saw the under post a 42-32-8 mark in the regular season in 2024-25 and followed that up by having the under post a 10-8 mark in the playoffs. The Stars had an average total of 6.06 goals per game and that number bumped to 6.22 goals per game as the visiting team. Winnipeg saw the under post a 45-34-3 mark in the regular season though the over was 7-6 in their postseason run. The Jets saw an average total of 5.67 goals per game on the year and that number plummets to 5.34 goals per game at home. Five of the six meetings in the postseason fell short of the total. With two elite goaltenders and the way Winnipeg stifled teams at home last season, this game falls short of the total.
