Red Wings on historic playoff drought
The Detroit Red Wings are a historic franchise with 11 Stanley Cup titles, but they are now in the midst of a nine-year postseason drought, tied for the third-longest in NHL history. So far, the Red Wings are off to a strong start, sitting second in the Atlantic Division. Detroit is 5-1 at home but will now head on the road for five straight games, where they are only 1-2.
Even with their winning record, the Red Wings are only 17th in the NHL, averaging 3.0 goals and 28.2 shots per game. Defensively, Detroit ranks 11th in shots allowed and 19th in goals allowed per game (3.1). The Red Wings have used both John Gibson (3-2, 3.46 GAA) and Cam Talbot (3-1, 2.98 GAA) at goaltender. Gibson got the start and the win in Saturday’s 6-4 game against the Blues. Gibson (0.87 save%) is expected to get the start on Tuesday.

Blues allowing goals in bunches
The Blues are on a four-game losing streak after falling to the Penguins 6-3 on Monday. Joel Hofer took the loss Monday, allowing five goals to drop to 1-2 with a 6.23 GAA. The defeat marked the third straight game in which St. Louis has allowed at least six goals. In Saturday’s loss in Detroit, the Blues jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the second period before the Red Wings scored six straight goals.
The Blues rank 31st in the NHL, allowing 4.3 goals per game, and sit last in the Central Division. Most likely to start in net Tuesday will be Jordan Binnington, who is 2-3-1 with a 3.12 GAA with a 0.872 save percentage. Binnington made the start in Detroit on Saturday and allowed five goals in the loss.
Red Wings vs. Blues Predictions
Moneyline Pick for Red Wings vs. Blues:
- Red Wings -105 (4 units)
The Blues dominated early in Saturday’s matchup, but the Red Wings flexed with the game’s final six goals. Detroit now has the rest advantage, as the Blues just played and lost in Pittsburgh on Monday night.
The Red Wings have been undervalued this season, making them the fourth most profitable moneyline team in hockey so far, while the Blues have been the sixth worst. With St. Louis struggling defensively and having less rest, I have to fade them here. Take Detroit.
Total Pick for Red Wings vs. Blues:
- Over 6 (4 units)
The Blues have allowed seven goals to Utah, six to Detroit, and six to Pittsburgh in their last three games, while scoring four goals twice and three on Monday. Both goalies have had their ups and downs. Detroit has allowed at least four goals in its last three games and ranks 25th in opponents’ shooting percentage. With St. Louis dead last in opponents’ shooting percentage allowed, the over is the play for me.
