Oilers Trying to Gain Ground in Pacific Division Standings

Edmonton improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven games as they dropped Pittsburgh on the road Tuesday. The Oilers entered Wednesday night 16-12-6 on the season and stood tied for fifth in the Pacific Division, four points behind the Ducks for the top spot. Edmonton entered Wednesday’s action 3rd in the league in goals per game as they average 3.41 goals per contest. The Oilers stand 28th in goals against as they allow 3.41 goals per night. Edmonton stands 1st in power play success as they cash in 32.6% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Oilers are 20th in penalty killing as they successfully get through 79.4% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Pittsburgh, Edmonton’s offense was clicking on all cylinders, and that helped them skate away with the road victory. The Oilers owned a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period and skated off with a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes of play. Zach Hyman opened the scoring with a power play goal, his eighth of the year, at 11:38 off assists from Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Just 14 seconds later, at 11:52, McDavid made it 2-0 with his 19th goal of the year, on the power play with assists going to Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard. They gave up a goal later in the period. In the second period, Edmonton was outshot 9-7 but outscored Pittsburgh 2-1 to take a 4-2 lead at the second intermission. Matt Savoie gave the Oilers a 3-1 advantage with his seventh goal of the season at 4:35 off assists from Alec Regula and Mattias Janmark. After Pittsburgh narrowed the margin to 3-2, Bouchard restored Edmonton’s two-goal margin with his sixth goal of the season, on the power play, at 9:36 with assists going to McDavid and Draisaitl. The Oilers were outshot 12-6 in the third period with both teams scoring twice, allowing them to earn the victory. Vasily Podkolzin made it 5-2 with his ninth goal of the season at 6:47 off assists from Draisaitl and Mattias Ekholm. After Pittsburgh cut the margin to two, McDavid scored his second goal of the night and 20th of the season, into an empty net at 18:41, with Hyman drawing the lone assist, for a 6-3 margin. The Oilers gave up a goal in the final minute to close the scoring but skated away with the victory. Tristan Jarry made 26 saves for the Oilers, who were outshot 30-23, in the win. Jarry (11-3-1, 2.77 GAA, .905 save percentage, shutout) gets the start between the pipes here for Edmonton.

Boston Battling in Crowded Atlantic Division Race

Boston took care of business against Utah at home Tuesday night as they picked up their fifth win in six games. The Bruins entered Wednesday 20-14-0 on the season and stood second in the Atlantic Division, one point behind Detroit for the top spot. Boston is 6th in the league in scoring as they average 3.26 goals per game on the season. The Bruins are 18th in goals against as they allow 3.12 goals per contest. Boston is 5th in power play success as they have cashed in 25.5% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Bruins are 16th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 80.6% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against Utah, Boston trailed early but got stronger as the game went on, allowing them to earn the home victory. The Bruins were outshot 13-7 in the opening period and skated off with the game tied at one at the first intermission. After giving up the opening goal, Boston tied the score on Morgan Geekie’s 23rd goal of the season, on the power play, at 16:01 with assists going to David Pastrnak and Elias Lindholm. In the second period, Boston owned an 8-3 advantage in shots and outscored Utah 1-0 to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Geekie scored his second goal of the game and 24th of the year, 23 seconds into the stanza, off assists from Pastrnak and Nikita Zadorov. In the third period, Boston held an 8-5 shot edge and outscored Utah 2-0 to skate away with the win. Casey Mittelstadt made it a 3-1 game with his 10th goal of the season at 10:16 off assists from Pavel Zacha and Marat Khusnutdinov. Oilers vs. Bruins Pick

Oilers vs. Bruins Moneyline Pick

  • Bruins +125 (4 units)

Boston has been good of late with five wins in their last six games, while Edmonton is 5-1-1 in their last seven contests. The Oilers are playing their fourth game in six nights here so fatigue could play a factor in this contest. Edmonton is a pedestrian 8-9-3 as the visiting team this season, while Boston has posted a solid 12-5-0 mark on home ice. We know that the Oilers can put the biscuit in the basket but they have to hope Jarry can be the stopper between the pipes. Boston is more established on the defensive end of the ice, and that helps the Bruins as they claw out a victory here.

Oilers vs. Bruins Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6.5 (4 units)

Edmonton entered Wednesday night having seen the over post a 19-14-1 mark in their 34 games on the year. The Oilers have an average total of 6.82 goals per game on the year, and that number falls to 6.30 goals per game on the road entering Wednesday night’s action. Boston has gone over the number in 19 of their 34 games on the year entering Wednesday night. The Bruins have an average of 6.38 goals per game on the year, and that number slips to 6.18 goals per game at the TD Garden in their 17 home contests. Eight of the last 10 meetings have fallen short of the number, and with Boston sounding defensively, especially at home, lean toward the under here as well.
