Edmonton Looking to Bounce Back from Shellacking

Edmonton fell for the fourth time in five games as they were hammered by Dallas in their previous contest Tuesday night. The Oilers entered Friday night 10-10-5 on the season and stood tied for fifth in the Pacific Division, four points behind the Ducks for the top spot. Edmonton entered Wednesday’s action tied for 16th in the league in goals per game as they average 3.08 goals per contest. The Oilers stand 31st in goals against as they allow 3.72 goals per night. Edmonton stands 3rd in power play success as they cash in 27.9% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Oilers are 22nd in penalty killing as they successfully get through 78.8% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Dallas, Edmonton was awful in their own end of the ice and they were clobbered at home. The Oilers were outshot 8-5 in the opening period and trailed 4-0 on the scoreboard at the first intermission. Edmonton faced a 15-10 shot disadvantage in the second period and was outscored 2-1 to trail 6-1 after 40 minutes of play. Connor Clattenburg got the Oilers on the board with his first goal of the year at 4:39 with assists going to Ty Emberson and Mattias Janmark. That momentum didn’t last long as they gave up a pair of goals later in the period to trail 6-1. The third period saw Edmonton with a 10-7 shot advantage with both teams scoring twice, leaving them on the wrong side of a blowout. Evan Bouchard got the Oilers within 6-2 with his fourth goal of the season at 1:23 off assists from Vasily Podkolzin and Leon Draisaitl. After giving up a goal to trail 7-2, Jack Roslovic got one back for Edmonton with his 10th goal of the year at 9:31 off assists from Connor McDavid and Matt Savoie. That was as close as the Oilers would get as they surrendered another goal later in the period to close things out. Stuart Skinner stopped four of eight shots in the opening period before getting the hook. Calvin Pickard stopped 18 of 22 shots in relief for Edmonton, who was outshot 30-25, in the loss. Skinner (8-7-3, 3.18 GAA, .876 save percentage, shutout) is expected to be between the pipes here for the Oilers.

Key Injury Report for Oilers:

  • Right wing Kasperi Kapanen (lower body) is out.
  • Center Noah Philp (upper body) is out.
  • Defenseman Jake Walman (undisclosed) is day-to-day.
  • Center Jack Roslovic (undisclosed) is questionable.

Kraken Seeking to Bounce Back From Two Straight Losses

Seattle suffered a second straight defeat as they were edged by Dallas in the second game of a back-to-back situation for the Stars on Wednesday. The Kraken entered Friday 11-6-6 on the year and they stood tied for second in the Pacific Division, one point behind the Ducks for the top spot. Seattle entered Friday 29th in the league in goals for as they average 2.57 goals per contest on the season. The Kraken are 2nd in the league in goals against as they give up an average of 2.57 goals per game this season. Seattle is 18th in power play success as they cash in on 18.2% of their opportunities with the man advantage. The Kraken are 30th in penalty kill rate to this point of the season as they have gotten through 71.4% of their shorthanded situations successfully.

Against Dallas, Seattle’s penchant for low-scoring, defensive battles caught up with them as they fell in a one-goal contest Wednesday. The Kraken saw the shots even at 10 in the opening period and skated off with the game tied at one after 20 minutes of play. After giving up the opening goal of the game, Brandon Montour tied the score with his fifth goal of the year at 9:06 off assists from Shane Wright and Berkly Catton. In the second period, Seattle saw the shots even at nine and they were outscored 1-0 to trail 2-1 at the second intermission. The third period saw the Kraken with a 9-2 shot advantage, with both teams scoring once, leaving them down as time expired. Vince Dunn tied the score with his fourth goal of the year 18 seconds into the stanza with Jared McCann drawing the lone assist. The Kraken gave up the winning goal later in the period to wind up with the loss. Joey Daccord made 18 saves for the Kraken, who owned a 28-21 advantage in shots, in the loss. Daccord (7-4-4, 2.59 GAA, .906 save percentage, two shutouts) gets the start in goal for Seattle here.

Oilers vs. Kraken Pick

Oilers vs. Kraken Moneyline Pick

  • Kraken +136 (4 units)

Edmonton has been awful in their own end of the ice all season long and they’ve been even worse of late. The Oilers have surrendered at least four goals six times in their last 10 games and allowed at least five goals in five of those. It hasn’t mattered if it’s Skinner or Pickard in net, the red light has been flashing with a frenzy. The good news for the Oilers is that they are facing a Kraken squad that has had their issues on the offensive end of things. On the flip side, only Colorado surrenders fewer goals per game on the season. Edmonton already lost to Seattle once this season. With the way they’ve looked recently, it’s hard to back them here. Take the Kraken at home.

Oilers vs. Kraken Over/Under Pick

  • Under 6 (4 units)

Edmonton entered Friday night having seen the over post a 14-10-1 mark in their 25 games on the year. The Oilers have an average total of 6.80 goals per game on the year and that number falls to 6.13 goals per game on the road entering Friday night’s action. Seattle has seen the under post a 5-4 mark in their nine games on the year. The Kraken have an average total of 5.13 goals per game on the year and that number drops to five goals per game at home on the year in 11 contests. Seattle plays another tough, defensive-minded, physical game and that keeps this game under the number.
