The Flames play without rest
Saturday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the Calgary Flames hosted the Dallas Stars on Saturday night, looking for a rare consecutive victory. It’s been a rough season for Calgary thus far. Along with the Nashville Predators, the Flames look like the worst team in the NHL.
Last Wednesday, the Flames scored more than three goals for the first time in two weeks, beating the worst team from the Atlantic Division, the Buffalo Sabres, 6-2. Calgary notched four unanswered goals in the third period after blowing a 2-0 lead.
Devin Cooley posted 28 saves against the Sabres, advancing to 1-2-1 on the season. He was confirmed for Saturday’s clash against Dallas, so we’ll see Dustin Wolf in the crease on Sunday. Wolf is 5-11-2 with a 3.08 GAA and a .892 save percentage this season.
The Flames allow 3.05 goals per game (18th in the NHL) and score just 2.27 goals in return (32nd). They are dead last in power-play percentage (9-for-72). Nazem Kadri leads the charge for Calgary with four goals and 10 assists.
The Canucks continue to struggle
The Vancouver Canucks have only won one of their previous six games overall. After stopping a three-game slide with a 6-2 road victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Canucks dropped consecutive games against the Florida Panthers 8-5 and the Dallas Stars 4-2.
Last Thursday, the Canucks outshot the Stars 36-24, but it wasn’t enough. Kevin Lankinen had another bad day in the office, and the 30-year-old netminder is now 4-6-2 with a poor 3.49 GAA and a .886 save percentage in 2025-26.
The Canucks are without their starting goalie, Thatcher Demko (5-4-0; 2.80 GAA; .903 SV%), and Lankinen has been far from his 2024-25 form. Jiri Patera made his season debut last Monday, giving up seven goals on 40 shots in that rough loss at Florida.
At least, the Canucks score 3.05 goals per game (tied for 16th in the NHL) on an 11.5 shooting percentage (tied for 12th). They are 17-for-73 with the man advantage (11th). Elias Pettersson (G7, A13) and Quinn Hughes (G1, A19) have recorded 20 points each, while Kiefer Sherwood has amassed 12 goals and four assists.
Flames vs. Canucks Pick
Moneyline Pick for Flames vs. Canucks
- Vancouver Canucks (5 units)
The Flames struggle to score, while the Canucks struggle to defend. Both Dustin Wolf and Kevin Lankinen were excellent last season, but they’ve been bad so far this term. Hereof, this game could easily go either way.
I’m going with the Canucks because of their offense. It’s hard to trust Lankinen, but Wolf has allowed at least three goals in four of his previous five starts. Moreover, the Flames will have to deal with fatigue on the second night of a back-to-back. This is the fourth game in six days for Calgary.
Over/Under Pick for Flames vs. Canucks
- Over 6.0 (5 units)
Despite the Flames’ offensive woes, I have to go with the over. The Canucks are dead last in the NHL in penalty killing (68.1%), and the Flames will find a way to score two or three goals in this matchup.
Vancouver will continue to lean on its offense. Quinn Hughes has amassed a staggering 13 assists over his previous seven games, while Elias Pettersson has recorded four goals and five assists in his last five appearances.
Each of the Canucks’ last 11 outings has seen at least six goals on the scoreboard, and the over has hit 10 times in that stretch.
