Kings Answer with Dominant Win
The Los Angeles Kings are seeking more consistency. The Kings have been hit or miss most of the season and are having difficulties generating goals. The Kings are 2-3 in their past five games. This includes disappointing home defeats against the Blue Jackets and Kraken. The Kings answered those defeats with a 6-1 home win against the Ducks on Saturday. The Kings are in a wildcard spot and three points behind the Ducks for second place in the division.
Adrian Kempe has been kept in check, managing only two points in his past five games. The 29-year-old winger signed a big contract extension earlier this month. He has netted 31 points on the season. He had an assist against the Avalanche last month. Quinton Byfield is having a poor season. The 23-year-old winger has recorded just two points in December. Byfield has 21 points on the season.
Brant Clarke has been steady on defense. The 22-year-old leads all Kings defencemen in points with 18 on the season. He has posted a +7 rating. Drew Doughty continues to log big minutes on the blue line. The 37-year-old has two points in his past five games. He has 13 points and a +13 rating. Doughty averages 22 minutes of ice.
The Kings have strong goaltending. Backup Anton Forsberg has issued a 2.60 GAA, a .905 save %, and a 6-5-3 record. Darcy Keumper is having an outstanding season, posting a sharp 2.19 GAA, a .917 save %, and a 10-6-6 record. He is on the IR and remains out for the next few weeks. Phoenix Copley is the backup with Keumper out. Copley has played one game this season in a defeat against the Kraken.
Los Angeles is averaging 2.5 goals per game, ranking them 29th in the NHL. The Kings are keeping opponents to an average of just 2.5 goals, good for second.
Colorado Extends Winning Streak in Road Win
The Colorado Avalanche are seeking their 29th win of the season on Monday. Colorado is having a dominant season and has been atop the NHL standings the entire year. They now stand six points ahead of the Stars, who are second in the NHL in points. Colorado has won nine of its past 10 games. This includes a 5-1 road win against the Wild. The Avs posted a 1-0 home win against Utah before the holidays and recorded a 3-2 shootout road win against the Knights on Saturday.
Nathan MacKinnon is having a stellar season. The 30-year-old star has amassed a stunning 20 points this month. McKinnon leads the NHL in goals with 30 and is second with 64 points on the year. He had two helpers in the win against the Kings in October. Martin Necas is also having a great season. The 26-year-old center has six points in his past five games and 49 points on the season.
Cale Makar is again a candidate to win the Norris Trophy. The veteran star defenseman has netted 11 points this month and has 43 points and a +32 rating. He averages 25 minutes of ice per game. Sam Malinski is having a breakout season. He doesn’t put up the points Makar does, but is steady. The 27-year-old defenseman has managed 21 points and a sharp +19 rating.
The Avalanche have elite goaltending. Mackenzie Blackwood has delivered a 2.16 GAA and a .924 save %. Scott Wedgwood is having the best season of his career, sporting a 2.13 GAA, a .919 save %, accompanied by a 17-1-5 record. Wedgwood was in the net in the win on Saturday, making 25 saves. He earned the win in the meeting against the Kings.
Colorado is scoring an average of 4.0 goals per game, leading the NHL. The Avalanche are keeping opponents to an average of only 2.2 goals, which is also #1.
Kings vs. Avalanche Pick
Spread Pick for Kings vs. Avalanche
- Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (5 units)
The Los Angeles Kings have not been able to find a groove this season. They have dropped six of their past eight games due to a quiet offense. The Colorado Avalanche continue to destroy the opposition and stand at 9-1 in their past six games. They are by far the best home team in the NHL, sporting a stunning 15-0-2 record.
Furthermore, Los Angeles is having massive issues scoring goals. They have scored two or fewer goals in five of their past six games. This is not ideal against an Avs team that has conceded the fewest goals in the entire NHL. The Avs have conceded just 11 goals in their past six games. Also, nine of the Avs' past 11 home wins have been by two or more goals.
Over/Under Pick for Kings vs. Avalanche
-
Over 5.5 (5 units)
I expect this one to go over. Los Angeles is working on their offensive game and is overdue to begin scoring with more consistency. They broke out with six goals in the win on Saturday. The Kings have issued an xGF/60 minutes of 3.25 goals on the season, which suggests they should be scoring more than they are at the moment.
In addition, no one has been able to contain the Colorado offense. They lead the NHL in goals scored and shots on goal. They have scored 20 goals in their past five games. Colorado netted four goals against the Kings in the only meeting this season. Also, Kings #1 goalie Darcy Keumper remains out with an injury.
