Los Angeles Playing Second Game of Back-to-Back to Open Season

Los Angeles was in action Tuesday night at home against Colorado so they open the season with a back-to-back set. The Kings were solid last season, finishing second in the Pacific Division with a 48-25-9 mark on the year. They were eliminated in six games by the Oilers in the opening round of the postseason. After the season, the team parted ways with GM Rob Blake. In his stead is Ken Holland, formerly of the Red Wings and Oilers, taking over the reins. The Kings added some pieces in free agency, inking Cody Ceci (Oilers), Brian Dumolin (Devils), Joel Armia (Canadiens), goaltender Anton Forsberg (Senators) and Corey Perry (Oilers) to deals. They did lose Vladislav Gavrikov (Rangers), Tanner Jeannot (Bruins), Caleb Jones (Penguins) and goaltender David Rittich (Islanders) in the offseason.

Last season, Los Angeles finished 14th in the league in goals per game as they scored an average of 3.04 goals a night. The Kings were 2nd in goals against by allowing an average of 2.48 goals per contest. Los Angeles was 27th in the league in power play success as they converted 17.9% of their chances with the man advantage last season. The Kings were solid in the penalty killing department as they are 8th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigated 81.4% of their shorthanded situations in 2024-25. With Darcy Kuemper expected to get the start in goal Tuesday night against the Avalanche, Anton Forsberg is expected to make his Kings’ debut here. He was 11-12-6 with a 2.72 GAA, a .901 save percentage and three shutouts in 30 appearances, 27 starts, with the Senators last season.

Perry (knee) was injured in training camp and was placed on injured reserve Monday. He is expected to be out of action until late October at best. Defenseman Kyle Burroughs was also placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Golden Knights Locked and Loaded

Vegas made a big swing in the offseason in an effort to bolster their talent pool as they try chasing a second championship in franchise history. The Golden Knights won the Pacific Division crown for the fourth time in franchise history and downed the Wild in the opening round of the postseason before falling to the Oilers. Vegas’ biggest move was a sign-and-trade with Toronto to get Mitch Marner, who they inked to an eight-year, $96 million deal. The Golden Knights retained Brandon Saad and Reilly Smith in free agency while inking Jeremy Davies (Senators), Cole Reinhardt (Senators) and Jaycob Megna (Panthers) to two-year deals. Vegas saw Victor Olofsson (Avalanche), Tanner Pearson (Jets), Mason Geertsen (Sabres) and Dysin Mayo (Blue Jackets) leave in free agency. Alex Pietrangelo announced he was stepping away from hockey to recover from a hip injury and may not play this season.

Vegas finished the 2024-25 campaign 5th in the league in goals for as they averaged 3.34 goals per contest on the season. The Golden Knights were 3rd in the league in goals against as they gave up an average of 2.61 goals per game last season. Vegas was 2nd in power play success as they cashed in on 28.3% of their opportunities with the man advantage. The Golden Knights were 26th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigated through 75.7% of their shorthanded situations on the season in 2024-25. Adin Hill, who went 32-13-5 with a 2.47 GAA, a .906 save percentage and four shutouts in 50 starts, is expected to get the start in goal here.

Kings vs. Golden Knights Pick

Kings vs. Golden Knights Puck Line Pick

  • Golden Knights -1.5 (+128)

The Kings have won three straight meetings in this series, but the fact remains that they are playing the second game of a back-to-back situation here. That is something that takes a toll on a team, even right out of the gates to start the year. Vegas was solid at home last season, posting a 29-9-3 mark in the regular season, and they are a talented squad. Los Angeles is rather thin on the blue line and that depth will be tested with two games in 24 hours. The Golden Knights are a stingy defensive team and they should be able to wear down the Kings with their aggressive forechecking. Look for Vegas to take this one by multiple goals at home.

LA Kings vs. Vegas Golden Knights Over/Under Pick

  • Over 5.5 (-124)

Los Angeles saw the under post a 45-34-3 mark in their 82 regular-season games last season before posting five overs in their six-game series loss to the Oilers. The Kings saw an average total of 5.52 goals per game in 2024-25. That number climbed to 5.59 goals per game as the visiting team last season. Vegas saw the under post a 42-37-3 mark in the regular season in 2024-25 before seeing the under go 5-5-1 in the playoffs. The Golden Knights had an average total of 5.95 goals per game on the year. At home, that number climbed to an even six goals a night. With the Kings playing their second game in as many nights, look for the Golden Knights to cash in enough that a late goal pushes this game over the number.
