The Leafs keep losing
From a betting perspective, the Maple Leafs are just 6–16 against the puck line this season, and 17 of their 22 games have gone over the total. Despite the season-dominant trend, three of Toronto's last four have gone under, but in Saturday’s matchup, we saw another over as Toronto fell 5–2 to the Montreal Canadiens on the road. The Leafs have now lost seven of their last eight.
If a team is consistently playing in games that go over the total, usually it means they are struggling defensively, and that’s exactly the situation with Toronto. They rank dead last in the NHL, allowing 3.7 goals per game, and they’re 28th in shot attempts allowed. The Leafs have already used four different goaltenders, with Anthony Stolarz (6–6, 3.51 GAA) leading the group, but he’s currently injured. With Stolarz out, Toronto has turned to Joseph Woll, who has started the last four games and gone 1–2–1 with a 3.27 GAA and a .905 save percentage. Last season, Woll played a bigger role, going 27–14–1 with a 2.73 GAA and a .909 save percentage.
Offensively, Toronto remains strong. They rank fifth in goals scored (3.4 per game), sit 15th in shot attempts (27.8 per game), and continue to dominate face-offs, ranking second in the NHL in winning those.
Columbus looking forward to home cooking
The Blue Jackets come in at 14–9 against the puck line and 10–11–2 to the over. Columbus has dropped its last two games and three of its last four overall — all on the road — though one of those losses came in overtime.
Columbus ranks third in the NHL in shot attempts (30.3 per game) but only 24th in scoring (2.9 per game). They’re also 14th in faceoff wins. Defensively, the Blue Jackets are also shaky, ranking 24th in goals allowed (3.3 per game) and 30th in shots allowed (31.4 per game).
Att goalie, Jet Greaves has been solid with a 7–4–3 record, a 2.80 GAA, and a .904 save percentage. Next up is Elvis Merzlikins, who has not been as sharp, posting a 4–5 record, 3.37 GAA, and .894 save percentage.
Toronto Maple Leafs at Columbus Blue Jackets Predictions
Toronto vs Columbus Moneyline Pick
-
Columbus Blue Jackets ML (5 units)
This is another tough spot for Toronto. Columbus has won the first two meetings this year and five of the last six head-to-head overall. Toronto has dropped seven of its last eight games overall and is just 1–6 on the road this season. The Maple Leafs also continue to be a mess defensively. As Columbus has won four of its last five games at home, I have to ride with them again here.
Toronto vs Columbus Total Pick
-
Over (5 units)
I’m still not ready to start recommending Toronto unders. The Leafs have allowed five goals in four of their last eight games, and they’ve scored at least three in seven of their last 10 . As for Columbus, they’ve allowed four or more goals in three of their last four games, and they’ve generated at least 29 shot attempts in seven straight contests. With two leaky defenses and vulnerable goaltenders, I like the over here.
